Do Your Best, Do Your Best♪
It's been a busy weekend!! On Saturday I went out to take part in the training classes for the Miss Universe Japan finalists! It was to gather research for my next Asahi Weekly article... and omg, I learned a LOT! To be honest, I feel kind of like it made a major impact on my life. More about it after the article comes out. ^^

Then on Sunday I went to Jun-chan's 25th anniversary concert! I suppose people that have read my blog for a looooooooong time remember that I used to post about my friend Jun-chan a lot. She is a really famous Seiyuu, and probably one of the sweetest people I have ever known. ^^ We both got busy and sort of fell out of touch, but recently we started talking again ♥ (You can read about her roles at Wikipedia here. Though it seriously needs to be updated!) So, she invited me to her concert, and it turned out that Jenya had come too! It's such a small world! Jenya too is such a sweetie, we need to hang out more often as well! Actually, I really want to do a photo shoot with her! Anyone willing to play cameraman for us, sometime? By the way, I've said it before, but Jenya is a seiyuu too, even though she was born and raised in Russia. She's a really amazing success story! Her lj is in russian, but it's here if you can read it: pocket_girl and her japanese blog is here, and here is a good interview with her. ^^

Ahhh... Jenya and I seemed to feel the same way after watching Jun-chan's concert: We have to try our best, too! It is always so inspiring, seeing what others have done. I hope, one day, someone says the same thing about me. Anyways, today will be dedicated to making manga! GANBARIMASU!!

Which is great, because I woke up early yesterday with terrible cramps. Terrible, awful, HORRIBLE cramps! x.x! I didn't have any medicine,so I stayed in bed until I couldn't handle it anymore, and got dressed and hauled myself to the store. I'm glad I did, because Japanese medicine is really, really good. The pain almost completely disappeared! Finally I was able to get ready and head out to meet with M and a group of friends in Shibuya. We talked about some projects that we wanted to work on together, and I think sort of made some headway. We were out there for a lot longer than I thought, though! When I finally got home around 11, I collapsed into bed and spent 10 hours sleeping. ^^;; I guess that I needed it!

So, before I make my getaway and start working on stuff, here are two pictures from the other night, and another anime/manga meme! ^^

Jenya, Jun-chan, and me after the concert.

Us with the band members =^-^=

Part I. Anime:
01. What was your first anime?
I said it in the last meme and it will never change of course! Sailor Moon. ^^

02. How were you introduced to anime?
My best friend (at the time) started watching it on USA, and she told me about it. One day we started watching it at her house, and then I went over to her house almost every day to watch it! (My family didn't have cable) Later on, we found out that they also had a limited selection of anime on tape to rent from the video store (this was before DVDs got big. LOL I feel old!).

03. What are your anime obsession/fandoms?
Oh my.. I was going to answer talking about Bakuman.. but then I realized that this is about anime only and I don't really like the anime version (It did get better, but the manga is so much better, and well... seeing the anime all I can think of is how OLD it is! I mean, the storyline ^^; They haven't even come up with Trap yet! TRAP!!That seems like ancient history.. anyone with me here? LOL By the time the anime gets to PCP I will be old and grey, lol.)! Um... well, I watched the first episode of that new anime Fractale yesterday, and it seems interesting. I will continue watching it! Anyone have any recommendations of anime from this season that are good so far?

I was really into Kuragehime when it first came out, but I feel like it got boring really fast. The manga, too. ^^; I think that when they made over the sub-characters and they still looked... horrible.. that's where I lost interest. It seemed unfair, and well.. boring. ^^;

04. What were some fandoms that you lost?
What do you mean, lost? Do you mean, stuff that I used to obsess over that I'm not really obsessed with anymore? I was never all that involved in fandom stuff. I mean, I didn't write anything and I rarely drew fanart.. I did RP a lot, though.

Well, I was really into Sailor Moon and Prince of Tennis, Weiss Kreuz, Bleach, Hunter x Hunter, Nana, and a handful of others, but the only one I would say that I was involved with the "fandom" at all was Tenipuri (more Tenimyu I guess, since I used to scan things way back when. I deleted everything when I started working there, though.).

05. What is your genre preference?
I looooove shoujo!! I also like anything original! I guess all-considered, I like slightly racy love stories more than anything. ^^

06. What was your first anime movie that you've watched?
Anime movie... OMG this was Ghost in the Shell (the original). One of the worst pieces of crap that I've ever watched. To put it mildly. I wonder if I'd still think the same thing if I watched it now. But I don't want to waste my time!

07. What was the first anime you've bought on vhs or dvd?
Hmmm... hmmm.... hmmmmmmm..... Well, first off I had a LOT of fansubs on VHS, but as far as buying.. I don't know. Maybe a Sailor Moon or Ranma tape. For DVDs, I think my first anime DVD was Perfect Blue. I still have it! OMG I love that movie! By coincidence, Jun-chan was the voice of the main character. I didn't know her at the time of course! XD;; (small world!)

08. Do you buy a lot of anime merchandise, and if so, what?
No.. --; I almost never buy anime merchandise anymore. It's not because I don't like it, it's just that I never see anything that I really want! I would like a few of the new Bakuman chibi dangly things that came out in November, though. I will have to see if I can find them someday. I never get all the way over to Akihabara to look though.

09. Sub vs. dub?
I think they both have their places. I prefer sub these days because I want to listen to the original if possible, and because it is good study for me. But some old english dubs I still prefer over the original (Sailor Moon, Ranma 1/2, and Tenchi Muyo for example).

10. What are you currently watching now?
Just that Fractale anime and Bakuman, and sloooooooooowly going through Vifam and Sailor Moon. I would like to sit through and watch or rewatch a lot of anime though. ^^ I do watch random things here and there.

Part II. Manga:
01. What was the first manga you read?
Oh god... I think it must have been Ranma 1/2? There was almost no manga available in english when I started liking anime. BBack then, it was $16.99 for one volume of Ranma!! Oh man.

02. What was the first manga you've bought?
See the above. ^^

03. How many volumes do you have now?
Hmm.. not too much, to be honest. I tend to borrow or read online/in stores/magazines, and only buy what I want to keep forever. I tend to give a lot of manga away when I decide that I don't like it anymore, so my collection isn't really that big. I wouldn't even call it a collection. Not counting Tenipuri, I guess I have around 100 books, maybe? Probably not that many.

04. What is your favorite manga (only, that's not made into an anime)?
By some coincidence, a lot of the manga I like gets made into anime, or I start disliking it for some reason! (like Hiyokoi) So, I guess... Oyasumi Punpun! It got a little bit too adult for me recently, though. I don't think it works well with that manga. It was better when it was more innocent.

05. What manga have you've been waiting for to be translated for a long time?
I don't wait anymore, since I live in Japan. ^^; Gomen! I guess if I wanted something to be translated so that friends overseas could read it, I would say Bakuman! Though I think that it's come out recently...?

06. Do you buy manga monthly?
I buy Ribon every month!! I buy other magazines here and there, but nothing really catches my eye these days. I wish that I had something to follow and get excited about every month!

07. Is there a manga series that you prefer as an anime? And vise versa?
Hmmm.. I think Sailor Moon, Hunter x Hunter, and Marmalade Boy were better as animes than manga, in general. Vice-versa.. where do I start? Bakuman is a really good example! The manga is sooooooooooooooooo much better!! And.. well.. Peach Girl! I don't know why the anime was so badly produced, it really ruined what is a great story! Most of the time I prefer the manga, to be honest. But if an anime is really well-done, then it can be better!

09. Do you prefer actual manga vs. scanlations?
Well, actual manga is better-looking usually. But scans are free (though illegal), so. Read which you like, but please buy if you want to support your favorite artist! =^^=

10. What manga are you currently waiting to be released this year?
Umm... well, I assume this is talking about english versions? There is nothing that I'm waiting for. But I suppose you could say that I am waiting for Yazawa Ai to start drawing again! PLEASE FINISH NANA!!!!! ToT

Part III. Anime vs. Manga:
01. Which do you prefer?

I generally prefer manga, though sometimes the anime is better. I like both to be honest!

02. Do you appreciate the art more in anime or more in manga?
Manga, usually! It's usually much better in the manga. Exceptions are things like Itazura na Kiss and anything by Rumiko Takahashi, where the anime art is better.

03. Do you like drama cds?
Hmm.. I have barely listened to any, but now that I understand Japanese I bet I would like them! ^^

04. If you had to choose, would you work for a manga company or an anime company?
Manga of course ^.~

05. If you ever had your own manga made into an anime, would you want it to or would you not want it to be made?
Of course I would want it to be made!!!!! Isn't that the dream of a lot of mangaka? But if they made it badly (PEACH GIRL!!!), then I would be really upset.

Haha, I know Jenya from poupée! This was one thing I didn't know about her though. Time to go in creeper mode and seek out the works she participated in! >D

helo nice meeting you.

My name is ANA and i am in love with JAPAN. I wanted to ask you, when you moved to japan did you have a job offer or did you went for vacation and stayed?? I really want to go and study japanese but i have to finish school first, so i am a little bit lost and a little bit scared of what could happen there. Hope that you get your manga debut really soon. You are a big inspiration.

One Reader more
Hey Jamie! :D

With me you have now one reader more! ;) I added your Blog a while ago, but only now had time to read carefully.
It is absolutely amazing you did the step to move to a foreign or lets say to such an "exotic" country to fullfil your dream! You really really encouraged me to do my best to fullfil MY dream! Your blog by the way is really good, totally sweet style, I love the photos and I`m absolutely curious and interested in your way of becoming a mangaka!

In August maybe I am in Tokyo, is there a possibility to get a signature from you? Once you get famous I can say I have an autograph from Jamie, the american Mangaka from Japan!!! :D

Keep it up! You will make it! :D

Actually, I really want to do a photo shoot with her! Anyone willing to play cameraman for us, sometime?

Yes! You know how I've recently become Very Serious about my photography? I've been looking for models recently and was probably a couple of weeks away from putting one of those creepy ads in Metropolis that promises "free photos for your portfolio :)".

I have some cosplay photos I took at Comiket, although they're not as good as recent pictures since I didn't want to bug the people in question too much or get in people's way and was just getting used to the camera settings. I also have some goth/livehouse portraits here. Shot during performance, so not posed. I'd like to find out what I could do with models who are actively participating in a photoshoot. Just let me know.

"But if they made it badly (PEACH GIRL!!!), then I would be really upset."

I'm curious why you think that way; didn't the plot stay decently true to what happened in the manga?
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on January 19th, 2011 01:09 am (UTC)
It wasn't the plot, it was the animation that bothered me. The animation looked so terrible and cheap, I was really disappointed. Actually, I never finished watching the anime because it was so badly drawn. T.T

One of the anime that catched my attention this season is Hourou Musuko *__*

I don't know if you'll like the theme of it, but so far I think it's interesting: "The story depicts a young boy named Shuuichi Nitori who wants to be a girl, and his friend Yoshino Takatsuki, a girl who wants to be a boy. The series deals with issues such as transsexuality, gender identity, and the beginning of puberty."

Thank you for all your posts of how to be a mangaka! ^__^

mmm bakuman~ it is out in the states but i can't say that i've read it ( muuuch prefer the original words and art!! >.< )

technically (i think) scanlations aren't illegal as long as they aren't released in the country that holds a license for that page.. there was a big noise about what is and is not illegal when the bigger manga sites got pulled down... prolly still up somewhere.. ^^;;

but yes, tankos are WAY more beautiful and they support the artists!! <3

Jun, eh? The three of you are very cute, but she is much closer to my age... [erm, clears throat. yes, very cute.]
I like seeing your memes, and the answers are always quite thoughtful...

Let me know if you'd like to do a photoshoot. Just give me a time and day. :)
