The Otaku Encyclopedia
The Otaku Encyclopedia: An Insider's Guide to the Subculture of Cool Japan

Even if this book hadn't been written by my friend Patrick, whom I adore, I would still recommend it over and over again. Because it is the best, most informative, original, books on otakuism ever. Period!

I mean, I live and work in Japan. I've worked in the manga industry for years, and I've gone to manga and anime event after event. But I learned a LOT from this book!!! What Patrick knows makes me look like a complete noob. Which is good, though, because he shares it with us in the book!! Honestly, I have no idea how he amassed all of this info! If I was writing a book like that (I'm not even qualified, but..) I wouldn't have even known where to start! Leave it to a guy majoring in Otaku culture to know exactly what to write about! =^-^=

Besides the obvoious, there are tons of interviews in The Otaku Encyclopedia. I especially loved reading quotes from Shokotan and Ayakawa Yunmao myself! (hey, I like cute girls!)

Do you have any idea what Biyojo, DD, Doutei, Kuuru, Manpu, Pico, or Shokugan are? I had no idea, until I read Patrick's book. And these are just small examples that I picked out randomly. Actually, to be honest, I was looking at the book now to pick some examples and kept on reading random things for an hour without realizing it. ^^; (Which is a good thing, lol!)

I highly, highly, highly recommend it!! Coincidentally, since it's Christmas, it would make a great Christmas gift for ANY otaku!! Did I mention that the book is thick, gorgeous, and full-color? If you don't already have it-- go! Go! Get it now!! =^o^=/ (And on Amazon apparently it's on sale right now!)

When I was in university, I had to read a book about Otaku culture and how it relates to post-modernism. It made me interested in reading more about Otakusim in general, hahah. Will have to give this a look if I get the chance.
