Jdrama recs??
Hey minna-san! ^-^

Sorry for the absence, but I'm in the studio and busy working.. Oh my, the next chapter... well, you'll see.. ^^;;;;;;; I was/am squicked already and we've barely begun! (And no relation to this chapter, but I want a pet beetle!) By the way, if you have the new Pair Puri book (Atobe/Sanada), check out the inside of the back cover! My name is listed =D And some trivia: Atobe's green cell phone in the manga inside is the same as mine (made it easy to draw, since I could just take mine out and look at it XD). The next one is Shiraishi/Tezuka, and you'll understand my beetle comment then... and I would imagine that any Tez/Sanada fans are going to go crazy.. If there are any? We have an explanation for it even, lol... which I will tell after it comes out)

Anyways, my real reason for posting right now, other than to explain my absence: Can anyone recommend me some good Jdramas? Especially recent ones! I really have no idea what's popular, but I'm not really into the ikemen scene at the moment... what I want is good stories and good acting! Everyone helped me immensely with tv shows (more about that later), so any Jdrama recs? I'm really only looking for Japanese ones (not korean or chinese, etc), so that I can listen to it while I'm working and not have to concentrate (I would have to read subtitles for other languages.. ^^;;).

I'd really like something with a good (especially happy!) story, and good acting is a plus! It's hard to find in Jdramas, but they do exist...

Like for example, Kekkon Dekinai Otoko and Densha Otoko. Although the female lead in Densha was not any good, the others more than made up for it! And my god, the male lead in Kekkon was brilliant! =D Anything like those would be great!! Bonus if it ends better than Kekkon did though =D Oh, and of course GTO was GOLD =D As well as 1 Liter of Tears, although I cried a little bit too much. ^^;;

I've watched a ton of dramas over the years, so I might have seen what you suggest, but suggest it anyways! I'm pretty busy, so I might not get back to you right away, but we might fall into a good conversation of reminiscing sometime later on =D

As a note, I'm sure that Nobuta and Gokusen will come up.. already seen them (cute, and mildly entertaining... though I'm not really into the school thing atm, who knows?) I could never get into Stand Up, Kurosagi, and that yaoi mystery show that started with a Y.. err, I forget the name XD

And if you include a description or why you like it, I'll love you even more!

Yoroshiku!!! I will definitely write up a list of my recommendations/favorites at some point in the future, when I have free time ^^

The female lead for Densha Otoko is much better IMHO in other series. She was a lot more fun in the live action You're Under Arrest. If you've not seen it, I would recommend it, even though it is older. I have it subbed somewhere. I think the role of Hermes is just sort of... it's supposed to be sort of ephemeral which makes both the character and the role a little less interesting.

I don't really follow any of the new series. I tried watching Aibou since I like bad detective series. I sort of want to watch Hagetaka now since I enjoyed the movie and I enjoyed the movie version of Galileo.

I still have a huge huge soft spot for the super old J-drama Love Complex, though it doesn't compare to my love of Abarenbo Shogun. ♥

Though hmmm in general I don't think J-drama and good acting. ^_^;; I tend to look for more ones with interesting stories or characters or that make me laugh.

I would definitely recommend Proposal Daisakusen:

Synopsis: Iwase Ken (Yamashita Tomohisa) and Yoshida Rei (Nagasawa Masami) have been friends since elementary school. Ken, is obstinate and unskilled in love, but he fell long ago for the lively and cheerful, Rei. But Rei is about to get married to another man. While Ken and other friends from high-school attend the wedding ceremony, a fairy appears and sends Ken back in time, giving him a second chance to win the girl he loves.

It's a really cute story, though it's not that recent, maybe 2007? It's a back-to-the-future type drama, so there are (a lot of) school scenes, but that's not the overall setting, so I hope it's ok.

Also, Pride is really good:

Synopsis: Halu (Kimura Takuya) is the captain and star player of an ice hockey team, who is greatly respected by his teammates. For him, hockey is serious business that fully occupies his mind, while he treats romance as if it were a game.
Aki (Takeuchi Yuko) is a typical OL (office lady), and is waiting for her boyfriend to return from studying architecture abroad. At this point in time however, he shows no sign of coming back. One day, Aki's friends who are determined to find her a new boyfriend, invite her to watch an ice hockey game. There she sees Halu for the first time.
After the game, Aki and her friends join the players for a party celebrating their victory. Aki, however, is not so excited to be there. When she leaves the party, she bumps into Halu, who was slightly injured from a fight. They exchange e-mail addresses and part.
The sparks of mutual attraction are ignited in a second encounter between Aki and Halu, arranged with the help of her friends shortly after a party.

This is even less recent (2005), but it's one of my favorites. Plus, the acting's pretty good. It's been a couple years since I watched it so I'm iffy on the details, but I remember really loving it.

Hope you'll like them if you try them out. ^_^

jin is a really amazing drama that's airing right now. the description isn't too appealing but when you actually watch it your eyes are glued to the screen at all times XD

other dramas that i'd recommend are mr. brain and nodame cantabile :3

Let's see... Ones that I've followed;

RESCUE: It's about firefighters and how they're trying to become part of an elite team. Along with the missions they're on, etc.

Atashinichi no Danshi: About a girl that marries a man that is rich and takes care of his six sons. Uhhh, I should really get you better synopsis.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Well, I'm a big fan of Hana Yori Dango, but it's school-age so you might not care for it if you haven't seen it. xD

But another favourite? Sore wa, Totsuzen, Arashi no you ni... I absolutely adore this one. Just... a stunning series that blew me away.

I'm rewatching Liar Game at the moment, which I find fascinating. I'll have to list more when i get back home. Back to work with me!
piperindirect on November 17th, 2009 11:04 pm (UTC)
Oh oh another one that I adored was My Boss, My Hero which is hilarious, and then also IWGP (Ikebukuro West Gate Park) which is just... absolutely phenomenal. That was the series that really got me into jdramas. It's a bit old, but worth checking out.
Kira_Shadowkira_shadow on November 17th, 2009 07:30 pm (UTC)
mh I watch loads of dramas but mh hard to pick...
good ones I can recommend though are:

Official Sypnosis: Tsukumo Ryusuke is a quirky, yet brilliant neuroscientist working for the National Research Institute of Police Science. Wielding a unique perspective and psychology, Tsukumo tackles the nation's most baffling crimes and scandals, going head-to-head with the most brilliant and twisted criminal minds. But his eccentricities and poor social timing can also aggravate people and circumstances, further complicating matters. --TBS

It was too short :( *sigh*
I liked it because the lead actor is pretty good (Kimura Takuya) and the stories that the episodes revolve about are interesting to follow. There's humor, there's mystery even some suspense.

2. Nodame Cantabile
Official Sypnosis: Based on the hit comic book by Tomoko Ninomiya, this is a fun-filled quirky romantic story of two very opposite people.

Megumi Noda, or “Nodame” is a piano student at Momogaoka College of Music. An extremely talented pianist who wants to be a kindergarten teacher, she prefers playing by ear rather than reading the music score. She is messy and disorganized, takes baths several days apart and loves to eat, sometimes stealing her friend’s lunchbox when it is filled with delicacies.

Shinichi Chiaki, is Momogaoka’s top student. Born into a musical family, he is talented in piano and violin and has secret ambitions to become a conductor. An arrogant multi-lingual perfectionist who once lived abroad in the music capitals of the world as a young boy, he feels mired in Japan because of a childhood phobia.

They meet by accident. Nodame quickly falls in love, but it takes much longer for Chiaki to even begin to appreciate Nodame’s unusual qualities. Their relationship causes them both to develop and grow. Because of Nodame, Chiaki got the opportunity to lead a student orchestra and begins to have a broader appreciation of people's musical abilities. Because of Chiaki, Nodame faces her fears and enters a piano competition. Opportunities open up as both begin taking risks, stretching themselves far more than they ever thought possible.

The new movie's scheduled to be out soon... and there's a lot of good (classical) music in it ^^~
I'm a fan of classical music because I play the piano myself... the characters are also very lovable in this and the humor is XD well, funny. Endo Yuya is in this too (somewhere). His role is a comic relief most of the time I guess...^^ I think what drew me to this were the actors and the characters they portrayed...

Official Sypnosis: his series revolves around a group of peculiar detectives in a new division created to fight against an increase in atrocious crimes. Osawa Eriko is a beautiful career woman who has just returned from training in the U.S. and is appointed as the "boss" of this division. But despite her intelligence and capabilities, she can never understand a man's heart, so she remains unable to find a husband. In fact, her assignment in the U.S. was really a demotion after she ruined her career track over a man. So why was she chosen as the boss of the new division? Even though the detectives are talented, they all have some kind of issue or flaw, and they are considered to be the "problem children" of the police force. In the end, the division's true purpose is just to isolate these problematic detectives.

I don't know if it qualifies for "happy" though... ^^; It's a crime/cop kind of drama...I watched it for the lead actors and I think it was pretty good...? :)
Kira_Shadowkira_shadow on November 17th, 2009 07:30 pm (UTC)
4. Koishite Akuma
Official Sypnosis: Ruka has yet to mature into a full-fledged vampire. His canines have yet to fully develop, which means he still hasn't tasted human blood — or, at least, human blood that he's drawn himself. In order to get him prepared, he is cast down into the world of humans, where he boards with Jiro, the owner of a Chinese restaurant, and enrolls in high school. His homeroom teacher is a cheerful, though meddlesome, young woman who catches the fledgling bloodsucker off-guard. Is he actually falling in love with a mortal?

I thought this series was underrated...okay it's very cliché at some points but it's a sweet kind of love story...but also taboo? (since it's kinda pedophile in a twisted kind of way). I have a thing for vampire stuff...and I couldn't resist the sub-title "VAMPIRE BOY" they gave the series...because it cracked me up so bad. And...I was amused by the whole "vampire puberty" thing so I kept watching XD

5. Otomen
Official Sypnosis: The story centers around the popular high school boy Masamune Asuka, the top kendo fighter in the nation. However, beneath his cool exterior, he is actually fond of sweets and shojo manga, and is skilled in sewing and cooking. When he instantly falls for the transfer student Miyakozuka Ryo, his secret is in danger of being exposed.

It's plain funny a lot of the time...and it's about a "recent phenomenon" (or so I'm told) in Japan, about the "herbivore" men... (Otomen is a word-smash formed by "Otome" and "Men") Might be a bit too much on the ikemen side for you though... but it's good for background noise XD

I liked the drama because I am a bit like "Ryo" the heroine myself...not the "normal" type of girl and a bit more on the tomboy side...and because I think Okada Masaki isn't such a bad actor :)

6. Galileo
Official Sypnosis: In "Galileo," Fukuyama Masaharu plays a genius physicist and university associate professor, Yukawa Manabu, who solves difficult mysteries. Affectionately known as Tantei Galileo ("Detective Galileo"), Yukawa is brilliant, an all-round sportsman, tall and handsome but eccentric. Yukawa's partner is a rookie cop, Utsumi Kaoru (Shibasaki Kou), a hot-blooded woman with a strong sense of justice.

One of my all-time favorites because it's plain awesome. And it doesn't have to super-ikemen factor... (stars Shibasaki Kou and Fukuyama Masaharu)... aside from MR.BRAIN I guess this one would be one that could catch your fancy? :3 The sypnosis actually sounds pretty bad but really, give this a try? :)

Hana Yori Dango series is pretty much a romance legend. XD

Also if you're into watching suspense type Jdramas at the moment; I HIGHLY recommend Maou, which is probably still at my number 1 top dramas. Also Ryusei no Kizuna and The Quiz Show.

Happy/funny stories... I recently finished Hana Kimi which is pretty good but then you said you weren't really into the school stuff. ^^;;

Please excuse my biased choices from Arashi lol. My Girl is a recent drama that's still airing if you want a nice cute/family sort of drama.

second the hana yori dango~!!!!

but the Japanese Hana Kimi is not as good IMHO as the Taiwanese version... as a HUGE fan of the manga, i was very disappointed in the character choices for the Japanese version

I didn't watch a lot of jdramas this year, the ones I watched were saltuary the ones they aired this summer in Japan.
Above all I found quite funny Otomen.
I think you know it already though? I didn't watch it all together and ended up finishing watching it few days ago (the Aki episodes) but I'd say it basically sums up all the cliches of the shoujo mangas and makes fun of them? In a kind way of course but it was funny XD
Maybe you can give it a try?
