ボランチアーしています♪ Volunteering a-go-go!
So, last Friday and Saturday, I volunteered with a really great group here, Second Harvest Japan. It was my first time doing anything like this in Japan, and I really hope that I have the chance to do more in the future! Actually, I will make sure to make it a regular thing. I definitely, definitely want to help out as much as possible!!

Second Harvest is at heart a food bank, and they do various types of food drives and other things to help provide needy people with food and support. I was really impressed with them, and I've been looking for a way to help out people, and it seemed to fit really well!! So starting early Friday morning, I came to their warehouse and cut vegetables and meat and generally got things ready for the food bank activities on Saturday. Then early Saturday morning, I headed out and spent the morning cooking food and sorting through donated vegetables and fruit, separating the salvageable from the stuff that was no longer edible. Then, we headed off to Ueno park, where we spent the rest of the afternoon serving food to homeless people and people that needed a hot meal. There was all kinds of food, even strawberries! I started out serving the strawberries until we ran out, and then I switched to handing out the bowls. IT WAS SO GREAT!! It didn't matter how tiring it was-- it was by far one of the best experiences that I've ever had!! Everyone was so different and their reactions were very individual.. it's really put my thoughts about homeless people into a new perspective. I really, really loved it. I want to do it again and again and again!!

One day when we achieve world peace, I think that we will be in a position to eliminate poverty as well. If only everyone would find a way to help out someone else that needs a hand. Even if you're the one who needs a hand (I certainly do at times, and right now I could use one emotionally), find a way to help out in whatever way you can, and the world would be a little bit of a better place. That's the idea! Right now, I can't spare any money, and I have very little time. But I can spare what I do have. It's important to me, because how can I expect others to help out if I don't do what I can, myself? This ties into something that I'm trying to develop on the side... I really, really hope that I can find a way to work these things out! ^__^

I feel good! ^____________________^ I hope that everyone gets a chance to do something so fulfilling in your life! If you volunteer, comment and let me know about what you do?

At my temple (before the nasty politics took over and killed all semblance of fun), we used to cook food and pass them around to the devotees during the eve and on Wesak day. We had homeless and poor people eating and sharing tables with those who are well-off or moderately so, and I used to love the idea behind this activity, that no matter what your background is, you are essentially of equal rank and status as everyone else.

Other than that, I used to help out at a local shelter for abused and neglected children, and taught them basic things like language and math. Pretty fun, even when there were days I would go home and cry because these kids are amazing and so incredibly brave and I love them so much.
