Kappadera and Nihon Minka-en pt.2!
So yesterday (so many of my posts start out like this!), Eda and I went on a hunt to find kappa-dera! Part of my research for my summer trip, I wanted to explore what the city had to offer in the way of that elusive creature that theoretically truly existed/exists. There are a lot of eyewitness accounts, especially from long ago, and quite a few books have been written, from what I understand (all in japanese, unfortunately but understandably).

Kappa-dera is an old, tiny temple near Kappabashi-dori in Ueno. It's filled with memorabilia, books, and artifacts about kappa. They even have a (supposed) dried kappa hand!! Unfortunately, the temple wasn't open when we were there. I think they only open the doors for special events, so we had to look in the windows and take pictures from the outside. It's too bad, too! I really wanted to go in! I really want to get a closer look at that "kappa" hand, too! It looked a little fake, but I've never seen a kappa before, so who knows!

After that, we went down to Nihon Minka-en, the house museum. We didn't have a lot of time, but it was a really great experience, and I want to go back again soon. <3

The entrance sign to Kappadera:

A close-up of the sign:

A strange kappa "gii-chan"!

The kappa couple guarding the shrine..

At the entrance of the shrine is an offering box. Because kappa like cucumbers, there they are!

Looking in through the window:

The hand..

The ceiling looked so cool!!

On the steps.. What if I saw a kappa?!?

Some things from the neighborhood:

A few pictures from Minka-en... I've already taken a bunch and we didn't have much time before they closed, so there's not too many, sorry... (Look here for pictures from the first time)

ome of the leaves are changing.. It's weird though, because it's almost freezing most mornings, yet most of the leaves around still haven't changed.

They had a really neat display of baskets this time!!

What I wonder is.. how did people keep warm? *shivers*

Actually, that's one of the reasons that I want to write a travel book to the "undiscovered" parts of Tokyo one day. I want to help share what I find most interesting about Tokyo with the rest of the visitors!! ^^

The main reason I friended you was because your LJ got recommened to me for writing about Japanese lifestyle by a non-Japanese and I thought it would be general tourist stuff, but I've been on for ages and you tell us so much details and visit many 'hidden' places, I love to read about them! Please write a guide, before 2009 if possible haha~ that will be my next time in Japan XD *tsukkomi'd*

Thing I learned from this post by chance: Jaken is a Kappa. Anime knowledge increased by 1 point. A good thing? Probably only if I plan on staying single.

*glances at living room wall*

OK, maybe my new Bleach wall scroll doesn't help either. Hah!
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on November 21st, 2007 07:44 am (UTC)
Do you mean Jaken from Inu Yasha? LOL I don't think he's a kappa, though I haven't seen him in the show so I can't say for sure..

What picture is on your wall scroll?
Raynermundist on November 21st, 2007 08:08 am (UTC)
Yeah, Jaken from InuYasha. I noticed that the statues looked like him, so I checked and from what I've read, he's a kappa.

As far as the wall scroll goes I got this one. It's the best one I've seen carried in a local store.

This area sucks for just about anything of Asian influence. The only place that even carries a large amount of anime and such is Suncoast. I really want a Best Buy. Hastings would be better as their anime prices are less than anyone's when it comes to anime. I don't buy much, but when I do I'd rather not have to pay an arm and a leg.
