Recommend me a movie?
Can anyone recommend me a movie?
I'm looking for movies that were made in the last 3 years, preferably ones that are out on DVD now, though they don't have to be. ^^ Is there anything that you loved that you'd consider a must-see?

I'm mainly looking for upbeat, happy stories (love comedy, etc), or ghost/supernatural, but I like pretty much all genres, so I'll take any suggestions! Please? :D;;; I feel like I've been missing out here in Japan! (And please tell me why you like it, if possible?) If you're not sure whether I've seen it or not, suggest it anyways and maybe I haven't! ^^

Bridge to Terabithia - LOVED it
1408 - Fairly good
Sunshine - Boring, couldn't finish
The Messengers - Good movie, ending lacked though
Oceans 13 - Boring. I liked the first two a lot but..
Harry Potter 5 - Good enough, though too halter-skelter, bad scriptwriter
Evangelion - better than the series ^^
Step Up - Loved this one
Mrs. Potter - Decent, though a little slow
Music and Lyrics - Probably my favorite movie of the year!!
Sakuran - Waste of time, terrible
Borat - Alright, though not my cup of tea
The Simpsons - Good... I'm a big fan of the series but this seemed more worthy (story-wise) of an episode than a movie
200 lbs Beauty - Very funny, I need to buy the DVD
The Devil Wears Prada - Loved it
Marie Antoinette - Good at points, boring at others. Love the costumes and Kirsten, of course!
Spiderman 3 - HORRIBLE ACTING. It's too bad too, I can't imagine what happened between 2 and 3 to lose all of the chemistry that they'd had!
Pirates of the Caribbean 3 - GREAT! My favorite of the 3.
Boku wa Imouto ni Koi wo Suru (I'm in love with my little sister)- The manga is great, the movie was terrible. There was no chemistry at all between the main characters, which is BAD for a series based on it's eroticism..
Paprika - Confusing... x.x
Nana 2 - Meh... Some actors were better (Shin), some were worse (Hachi)
Death Note 2 - GREAT and waiting for more!
Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (The girl who leapt through time) - Great!!

Suggested but already seen:
Hairspray - I found both the story and the music boring.
Superbad - Also didn't like this one. I like stupid humor sometimes, but I guess there's a limit.
Blood Diamond - Interesting movie, surprisingly good. ^^
Lovely Complex - I own the DVD, it's the only version that I can stand. ^^
Superbad - Turned it off halfway through because it didn't really appeal to me.
Love Actually - ♥

There's probably more but I can't remember... x.x I like movies a lo..

In the queue to watch:
Freedom Writers Decent movie, I was moved.. although the GTO format is so overused.
Pan's Labyrinth
The Number 23
The Invasion Interesting concept, but I got bored halfway through.
Equilibrium A little depressing, but interesting concept. I liked it though I'd only watch it once. ^^;;
Live Free or Die Hard 4
Miyori no Mori
Xmen 3
The Bourne Ultimatum
Little Miss Sunshine Other than the beauty pageant parts, utterly boring.
Mind Game
Dream a Little Dream
Snow Cake
Dead Man
Chronicles of Riddick
Mrs. Dalloway
The Descent
Stardust (eventually)
Casino Royale
Inu no Eiga
The Curse of Golden Flower
Tada, Kimi wo Aishiteru
Pride and Prejudice (BBC ver)
My Sassy Girl
Notes on a Scandal Found this one utterly boring. I'd have thought that with the subject matter, it would have been a lot more interesting.
Hot Fuzz

I should mention that while I like a lot of movies, there are some that just don't stick with me. I usually give them until a certain point and then fast-forward through the rest to see whether it looks watchable. Usually I end up turning it off early..

Mind Game anime (but, only if you like weirdness). Lots of styles in one, amazing twisting plot.

Dream a Little Dream: old 80's movie that I missed up until now. Typical 80's stylings, but with a good dream motif twist.

Thanks! I added some of those to my 'to watch' list. ^^

You have to see Blood Diamond and The Departed ^_^ GOOD movies. Well those are action/drama movies. Blood Diamond is very interesting and a very real story, it is very sad actually, I cried :\. The Departed is a remake of a Japanese(?) movie about cops and mafia, of course this was redone to fit in the US, but it is a great movie with a twist ;) hmmmmmm.. ohhhhhhhhh.. You have to see Pan's Labyrinth!!! Fantastic movie! you are going to love it (I hope), I DO! I first saw a preview of it at ComiCon last year and well it is a fantasy film. It is a fairy-tale for adults (as the director put it).. and of course you already plan to see it ^_^

I heard that Snow Cake is really nice. Information about the show can be found here-> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snow_Cake
And...oh yeah, watch Hairspray! That one I highly recommend, because it's extremely funny and the songs are really catchy too. Also, I recommend that one because if you like the soundtrack after you watch it, I can send you the songs ^_^
Information about hairspray found here-> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hairspray_%282007_film%29

Oooh Snow Cake sounds great, I'll definitely watch it! ^^
I've already seen Hairspray and didn't particularily like it though. ^^;

Prime is quite good movie I think...
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on September 8th, 2007 01:27 am (UTC)
Hmmm I'll try it out! Thanks Maako! ^^

LOL Oh man the 6th sense! One of my favorite movies references that movie like crazy (50 First Dates). The ending completely surprised me the first time. =D

I'lll try some of those other movies out! Do you think that the Riddick stuff is as good as the original movie (Pitch Black)? I really liked Pitch Black, so I'd be interested in seeing more if they're similar at all...

The Descent. (2005)

It's an extremely well made movie about a caving expedition.
Watch it when you're in the mood for something scary.

Also, do yourself a favor and don't try to look up info about it
before you watch it...it's better to have no idea what it's about.

I hardly know you but I'm 99.9999998% sure you will love this movie.

Oh, and don't watch it alone!

I second this movie :)

I liked Casino Royale a lot. Daniel Craig makes a fabulous Bond. Oh, and Stardust! I haven't seen it yet (don't think it's even out yet) but I really really want to see it. Also, Transformers was awesome. (just don't expect a deep intricate philosophically heavy plot :-P)
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on September 8th, 2007 01:33 am (UTC)
Ooh I've heard that Casion Royale is good! I hadn't tried it out because Idon't really care for Bond movies, but I think that I'll check this one out after all. ^__^

Oooooh man I've been really wanting to see Stardust!! Ihope that it comes out here soon!! ;o;

Adam Sandler? LOL I'm definitely going to see that one!

Sakuran might be better for fans of Anna Tsuchiya. I'm not, so I didn't really like it, I saw it for the beautiful sets and costumes, but the acting was just so bad...

*seconds the Hairspray vote* If you can rent Japanese movies, Lovely Complex is hilarious! And Inu no Eiga is lovely.
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on September 8th, 2007 01:36 am (UTC)
I've actually already seen Hairspray and I didn't really like it. And I own the DVD for Lovely Complex. Aaaah I loved that movie! It's the only version of Rika that I can stand, although the fact that they pretended she was tall was a little bit annoying. ^^;;

Inu no Eiga? I'll see if I can find it!! Thanks ! ^^

I would have to recommend Superbad. I haven't laughed that hard in a long while.
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on September 8th, 2007 01:37 am (UTC)
LOL I've actually already seen this one, or half of it.. I ended up turning it off, I guess the humor wasn't really my type..

LOL boobies? You know I'm there!!! I've never heard of either of these but I'll definitely try to get a hold of them! ^^

Its a few years old at this point, but I just adore Love Actually. It just makes me feel all warm and gooey inside everytime I watch it. ^^ And I watch it a lot.

I also really like the 6 hour BBC version of Pride and Prejudice. Its long, but a very faithful adaptation of the book. And it has a good cast... unlike a newer crappy version that is utter and total shit.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Give me time...
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on September 8th, 2007 01:42 am (UTC)
Oh man, I looooooove Love Actually!! You definitely picked my type of movie there. =^-^=

6 hours???? Oh myyyyyy that sounds so daunting! Well.. I'll see if Ican find a copy and go from there! ^^

The Number 23 was fine as a flight flick, but I am not sure I'd have spent money on it.

Thing I think you might not have seen that is very very good. Notes on a Scandal. But it is very culturally specific. I don't know how it will translate.
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on September 8th, 2007 01:45 am (UTC)
Wasn't Notes on a Scandal made in America? What culture is it specific to? I looked upthe description and I definitely want to see it! ^^

Casino Royale was _awesome_.

Also, I am totally in love with Hot Fuzz, although that probably won't be your cup of tea. It's gore/mystery/cop/action/comedy... great fun.
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on September 8th, 2007 01:47 am (UTC)
Hot Fuzz? LOL I love the name, so I definitely have to at least give it a chance!
