Kansai vacation day 3 - Nara = skeery DEER!
Whee, it's been a busy few days! No time to update until now, and I've been wanting to post these pictures forever. =^__^=

On day three in Kansai, we got up early and went to Nara. Where we were attacked by random deer in the park! Nara is really famous for the deer that freely go where they please. When I got there, I realized that, "they'll let you pet them!" is a serious understatement! You could probably do bad things to them and they wouldn't care, the only time that they'll react at all is when you act like you're going to feed them! Which I thought would be only fun, certainly not something that would make me fear for my life! ^_^;;

The deer were everywhere, including walking up to the open-air stalls, in the temples, on the street, in the grass (of course), and more! It must be a really shitty job being the one to clean up after them (don't kill me for the bad pun!). Ooooh my! At the end of our journey was Todai-ji, which houses the world's largest metal buddha. And oh my, it was HUGE! o.o;;

After Nara, we hit Osaka again to take in all-you-can-eat Dim-sum with Janet and Ashley. Mmm, stuffed!! I also checked out America-mura on my own and was accosted by several short boys who thought that they owned the road and it was okay to glare at me when they slammed into my shoulder. Um. >.<;; They walked into some waiting manager's arms at the backstage entrance of Osaka Big Cat complex, so I wonder who they were. (well, besides stupid assholes) Maaa, iin desu yo! After this, Ashley treated us to the best desserts ever at the Cake Factory (why oh why are there no branches in Tokyo?) and we took the hour-long train ride back to the gorgeous hotel to crawl into bed for the next big day! ^o^

DEER!!

They're everywhere!!

And I wanted to take a picture with them but... no food = no interest ^^;; Snubbed by the deer!! ^_^;;;;;

But aren't they cute???

You can also buy "deer droppings" as gifts. =D I so didn't buy them, give them to Minda, and bring them to my birthday party. Oh nooooo I didn't! ^_^;

I love the sign... "Don't get too close to the deer!!" Like you have a choice. :)

*ahem* Tenipuri fans, you should know it. These gods represent "ah" and "un"! I have to confess, I laughed so hard when I heard that!

Coming up... Todai-ji!!

This is the outer building of Todai-ji. Think it looks big now...

So big..!!

...Just look at the size of the people in the doorways in comparison!! :O

Here's buddha!

Talk to the hand!! (^_^;)

I took this by holding up my camera as high as I could reach..

Here are the buddhas that encircle the giant one's head. Amazing!

Here is a close-up of some of the lotus flover vases in front of Buddha.

Smaller golden Buddhas rested to either side.. (When I say smaller, I mean, about half-size....)

Guardians of Buddha, I think? In any case, they were really cool!

Okay, this is the clincher.... This hole that the kid is crawling through, is the same size as one of Buddha's nostrils. Wow............ o.o

WTF? This was outside the temple..

I put together a panorama of the temple and the grounds. ^^

And... back to the deer to feed them! It was really scary, the deer started rearing up to get to my senbei (crackers), and nipping at my clothes!!

.... And on to Dim Sum!! =D

And America-mura ("American town")
They had really neat human-shaped lightposts!

Yeah, I have no idea..

I randomly saw a Gloomy Bear store, for those of you into the cuddly creature. =D

And omg... the Comme Ca. Cake Factory!! I am so so so sad that there is not a branch in Tokyo! What gives??
They actually only serve tarts, which are super-expensive, but it's SO on my list during any return visit!

And the perfect end to the day was this sign in the public bathroom. I wholeheartedly endorse!!

What do you think? Would you want to go to Nara too? That was one of the most surreal experiences of my life!

that thing outside the temple.. if i remember properly from the last time i went there, its like.. a witch doctor kinda thing. you rub the part of it you want to have healed.. so say your hand hurts, rub the hand, and so fourth... though i wouldn't touch it. XD god knows how many people have rubbed every inch of it...

i'm going to nara tomorrow to see the deer! i miss them.... one tried to eat some guys shirt, and bit another guy when i went last time in the ass. XD that's what happens when you don't give them treats.

At first I thought those gods had penis candles in front of them. Talk about phallic!

Yay, deer. It's weird to see wild animals so socialized.

I think I would love to go there...especially for the cake and deer. The deer are adorable. In Washington DC, where my aunts and uncles live....we would always see deer in their backyard.

Dim Sum is so yummy. I love it.

certainly not something that would make me fear for my life

Probably not fear for my life, but definitely my clothes, finger, and money! Those deer would stick their mouths into your pockets and steal whatever paper's in there.

Oh Nara! That is one of the places I miss the most. I loved it at Nara. The demensions of Todaiji are just amayzing to see. It's so cool to think that humans built such a spectacular building. Man, I reallly wanna go back to Japan now.
Oooo, AAA. Good band. Sorry, I was reading the music part of your post. I like Kuchibiru kara romantica. It was the ending theme to Delicious Gakuen! Great drama.

Those deer are vicious.... I was trampled and I could do nothing to get back at them, for they are national treasures. Glad you had fun though. The great buddah is awesome. Did you get any omikuji (fortunes)? I got bad luck when I went to Nara. >.>

I personally love the food of Kansai, so many good things to eat that is so specific to that area; tako-yaki, taiko-yaki, 511 porkbuns, yatsuhashi... don't mind me, I'm just making myself hungry.
Magbabysyusuke on August 7th, 2007 12:17 pm (UTC)
totally love the deers.

It's sad that we don't have deers like these running freely in Singapore... only monkeys though.
Chiakichiaki777 on August 7th, 2007 08:48 pm (UTC)
Hmmm, deers or monkeys, which would be crazier....
