This afternoon I went to see Satoshi Kon's new weird wackjob anime, Paprika. And I mean it-- Paprika made little sense! ..But that's not the point! I loved it!! (-^〇^-) Many people don't know this, but I am a HUGE fan of his first animated movie, Perfect Blue, which is probably my favorite ever animated movie. I'm a sucker for phychological thrillers and for good animation, so it was a good bet. ^-~

Paprika is the story of Dr. Chiba and her team, whom, using new technology that she helped develop, can enter into the dream world to help patients sort out their inner turmoils that are affecting their daily lives. Kind of like a sleep psycho-therapy. Kinda cool, actually. ^^ Her alter-ego in the dream world is the gorgeous and super-hero-like red-haired Paprika (yes, named after the spice. There are numerous references ^^). Suddenly, though, a prototype of Dr. Chiba's device is stolen and a "dream terrorist" is discovered to be running amock in people's dreams. By controlling their dreams, he can strip them of their personalities and control their living actions. Several people on the team's dreams get invaded along the way, including Paprika's herself for a while, while Paprika and her detective pal Konakawa-san labor to unravel the controls of the dream world and stop this guy once and for all. I didn't undestand the ending. I won't spoil it for you, but let's just say that with dreams as his canvas, Satoshi Kon outdid himself with the weird and crazy imagery, the surreal plot and settings, and the music, done by Susumu Hirazawa (there are free downloads on his official page from the soundtrack!) was AMAZING. I think that I might want to go out and buy the soundtrack now..

There was so much of the "double-me" and surreal things that I loved in Perfect Blue and missed in Satoshi Kon's other movies, that I was really pleased! I would love to get the DVD for this later on. =^__^= There are some better reviews than mine on the net, so if you're interested please check them out. ^^ Outstanding animation, deep plot, and great music. It's a recipe for one insane movie! ^o^ Also, it turns out that the original novel was written by Yasutaka Tsutsui, who also wrote Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo. The subject matter is so different, I was shocked! =D

I picked up TONS of fliers for other movies.... happy! I really want to see:
Love My Life - Japanese lesbian sweet love story!! I went all excited when I saw this flier next to the one for SukiTomo (which I picked up because I find it amusing, more gay love stories for Saitoh.. XD Though I don't care to see it ^^;;)
Nagai Sanpo (A Long Walk) - The commercial for this one looked SO SWEET!! I nearly cried, the story was so sweet!! Apparently it has won a lot of awards.. it's about a kind old man who lives in the apartment next door to a couple who beats their preschool-aged girl. Sympathizing for her, he tries to be the girl's shining star by treating her to things and sharing secrets with her, and then one day decides to steal her away from her parents and run forever. So sweet!!! ;____; When she says, "Ojii-chan... Sachi no koto suki?" (Grampa, do you love me?) and he replies "Daisuki da yo," (I love you) I tear up.. I can't stop watching that part of the trailer.. ;__; Must see!!
Tekkon Kinkreet - Just because this is another trippy, weird animation. Not sure on this one, but I'll think about it..
Hyakumanchouja no Hatsukoi (The millionaire's first love) - I really, REALLY want to see this, but it's in Korean!! I'm reasonably sure that none of the theaters showing it are going to be playing it with english subtitles as opposed to Japanese (I only know one theater that does that sometimes, but it's not showing there). So I guess I'll have to wait for the DVD (;_;) and hope that there are english subtitles on it..
Dororo - Saw the preview before Nana2, and it looked pretty funny. =D
Oh!Oku - A love story set in old Japan. I love the costumes!!!

I'm so out of the loop in anime news. I'm a HUGE Satoshi Kon fan, and I didn't know he had a new movie coming out T_T

*wants to see it very badly now*

Oh, you AND me, and I live here! It's kind of embarrassing for me, I didn't even know that this movie was out until a 2 weeks ago when I happened upon the webpage linked from the local theater's site, which I hadn't been to in AGES. ^^;;;;; A friend asked me about the artist the other day and I remembered that I'd wanted to go see it, so I dragged my ass out of the house to see it today! ^^;;

I wish that there was an easy way to keep up on what's news in Japan... but I'm too cheap to buy the magazines and too lazy to find another way. ^^;;

Did you like Tokyo Godfathers and Millennium Actress? I never saw TG because I heard that it was like MA, which I didn't like at all. ^^;; But Perfect Blue, I am in forever worship to. I especially like the english version!! (which is blasphemy considering my friend does Mima's voice in Japanese, but I can't help it.. ^^;;;;;;)
Nayamichibi_nasu on December 13th, 2006 07:02 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I saw MA and TG. Didn't care for MA too much, but I liked Tokyo Godfathers a lot. It was kind of similar in style to Millennium Actress, but... I dunno. For some reason I liked it a lot. Not as much as Perfect Blue, but...

I did read a review of Paprika and it does sound very interesting. I wonder if they are taking it to the US.

Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on December 13th, 2006 09:18 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I watched part of that! But I didn't like it much..... maybe because the star wasn't a girl? Sometimes for me that makes a difference for some reason. o.o;;

Ooooo, Paprika sounds neat, I'll have to check it out. Tee hee, you are my official resource for all big screen Japan goodness! Picked up Nana in Hong Kong since it's impossible to get in the states.

Oh. I would love to watch that movie. I fell in love with Perfect Blue. The plotline sounds so very interesting and mind-boggling!! *sp?*

The Millionaire's first love is quite good. I think it does have subtitles. I think Japanese subtitles or possibly english. I'm not really quite sure...

Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on December 13th, 2006 09:19 pm (UTC)
I'm sure that in Japan, it's going to have Japanese subtitles. I'm not good enough to read them, so I'm going to have to not see the movie unless the english subtitles are on the dvd when it comes out. ;____;

Oh wow, that sounds so awesome. * 3*
It's definitely sounds like a must-see for me. Besides, it's Satoshi Kon! X3 I fell in love with "Tokyo Godfathers" and "Millenium Actress" (made me cry).
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on December 13th, 2006 09:21 pm (UTC)
You should give Perfect Blue a try!!! ^______^ Perfect Blue is more in the style of this movie, I actually didn't like Millennium Actress much. ^^;;; And I heard that TG is really realistic?
Vickytoldtojoinlj on December 13th, 2006 10:37 pm (UTC)
I'll have to look for "Perfect Blue" then. *nod nod*
"Millenium Actress" just captured me, mostly for the animation, but I followed the story pretty easily and was drawn in.
I don't know about "T.G." being realistic, but I thought that it's really heart-warming and funny.

oh I've read Love My Life... nice manga!
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on December 13th, 2006 09:22 pm (UTC)
There's a MANGA?! Wow, I need to read it!!
Can you recommend any other yuri mangas? I can't really find anything good, even YuriHime really kinda sucks..
marys_pshmarys_psh on December 13th, 2006 05:25 pm (UTC)
Oh I want to see that movie too. I saw Perfect Blue and Millennium Actress. I did think that something was missing in the last one, though the soundtrack and the design character was beautiful. Negai Sanpo seems a really really cute story ^_^ I love the site banner is just adorable.

H-Hirazawa Susumu...

No I wanna see that movie too D:
taishitaishi on December 13th, 2006 05:49 pm (UTC)
Also check out Paranoia Agent for a good psycho thriller.

Susumu Hirasawa is a musical GOD. The Paprika OST is the only thing I need to complete my collection of his music.

Check out this link for 4GB of Susumu goodness. Most of what is in here can no longer be purchased unfortunately.

I started with that, and then purchased the albums I was missing from here:

If it is cheaper for you to get the Paprika OST and mail it to me then it would be to buy it from their web page (they charge $8 for shipping) then would you mind doing so if I send you some money?

It is not often I fanboy over an artist but it is fun when I do. :)
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on December 13th, 2006 09:32 pm (UTC)
Thanks for the links, I'll check them out!! ^^ If I ordered from the site, I'd have to pay shipping within Japan probably (it's usually around $3), but maybe I can get used copies for really cheap or amazon might have them with free shipping and discounts. I'll check them out! ^^
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on December 13th, 2006 09:43 pm (UTC)
I checked and I can get it from Amazon for the same price (2800 yen, about $25) with free shipping. But still sending it to America, it would cost probably $5-6 shipping from my experience. I'm going to check at the used stores next week, maybe I can find a few used copies for cheaper. I'd like a copy myself! ^o^ Are you interested in a used copy? It might be a lot cheaper and usually they're fine quality. =D

It's definitely worth the wait! ^o^ And what I would have given to see it with subtitles! =D I should have known that it would be completely over my head in Japanese, lol.
