The Meguro Parasitological Museum
Yesterday, I went to the Meguro Parasitological Museum. Oh.. dear... o.o;;;

It's the only museum in the world (I think?) devoted to parasites... Tapeworms, bloodsuckers, and any kind of insect that feeds off of it's host. I went alone, but what I've heard is that it's actually a popular date spot. Of course, I completely understand, because on my romantic date, nothing could be more moving than the sight of a 28-foot tapeworm gakked from the belly of some poor japanese man who ate the wrong piece of sushi. Or a graphic picture of a tribal man with a goiter hanging from his buttcheeks so large that he has to have help to carry it in a litter anywhere he goes. O.o;;;;

I'm glad that the museum was free. But.... wow. Just wow, it was really, really strange. O.o;;

The front of the museum.

Right inside, there's a display of common parasites..

And in the center of the first floor (it's two floors total in a really small building) there is a display case filled with tons of parasites in liquid, waiting for youuuuuu~!

Close-up on some:

And a rather informative display..

Ooooh yummy~~~

And a really gross picture of that goiter that I mentioned...

*coughs*  Ew.... so not hungry for breakfast right now... I have a meeting today, but before that, I wonder what I should go see... (something free!!) Wednesday morning (my last day of summer vacation) I think I'm going to go to the fish market.

Eurgh, you're a brave woman :o) LOL..

Random question- have you ever been to the John Lennon museum? I'm wondering if it's as great as I imagine it to be. I know it's meant to be expensive to get into but... I imagine it'll be worth the price.

No, I've never even heard of it. o.o;; Strange that they would have a John Lennon museum in Japan of all places. o.o
+babymoss on September 4th, 2006 01:18 am (UTC)
Heh, yeah, it's the only one in the world too!. It houses Yoko Ono's collection of John Lennon memorabilia.
Here's the link if you're at all interested ;o) If you ever decide to go i'd love to hear about it. :D http://www.taisei.co.jp/museum/index_e.html

It's either in or just outside Tokyo I believe.

Sounds like a very special place. I can't wait to go one day.

Sounds interesting. ^^ I'm not a John Lennon fan so I probably won't ever go, but if I ever have a friend who asks, I'll point them in the right direction. ^^

Holy crap, I didn't expect that guy's goiter to be that large! 0_o Its amazing.

This museum sort of reminds me of the Mutter Museum (though the Mutter probably has more medical oddities than anything parasitic).

thanks, you just cured my hunger. I'm tied over for an hour or so more.

8D God, that is gross. And yet, strangely fascinating. I love museums.

Ugh. I have never heard of a... goiter? Can he gate that removed? >_>
angeangelamori on September 4th, 2006 06:48 am (UTC)
eeeeeew~!

And wtf!?!!!! How did you even manage to hear about this place?
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on September 4th, 2006 08:51 am (UTC)
It was in my Tokyo guidebook! I've been checking it a lot to see if there's anything cool that I haven't been to in Tokyo (there's a lot), and this was in the "free" section. =D
angeangelamori on September 4th, 2006 10:05 am (UTC)
eeeh... i must go try this out one day.

i think it's a popular 'date' place pretty much the way horror movies are popular. Date is assumed to be cringing all the time, so ...

Normally.. I'd look at all the pics you post.. but I think I'll skip this time. ^^;;
The museum sounds very.. interesting.

If you can hold your lunch after seeing huge tumors, then it should be okay. Otherwise, definitely don't look. X.x It made me pretty sick going to that museum yesterday, but it was quite the experience! ^o^

+babymoss on September 4th, 2006 02:12 pm (UTC)
LMAO. I didn't realise that last picture was a link. I just looked, it's so funny yet massively disgusting :D hahahaha. But mostly funny.

Errr, that's not a goiter. Goiters are in the neck.
This place reminds me of a hallway at my school. Lots of bugs preserved for generations of students to gawk at.
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on September 5th, 2006 12:23 am (UTC)
It's not? What is it? I only called it a goiter because that's what it said on a bunch of webpages that I looked at for the museum.
sleepycat_00sleepcat_00 on September 5th, 2006 02:26 am (UTC)
Goiters are problems of the thyroid, which is in the neck. I don't know what that picture is of, but that was definitely not the neck! ^^

Honestly I think I would've passed out somewhere in the midst of walking through all that. xD
