Refried beans too...........
To add to my "wtf, Tokyo food is SO expensive" I prove to you why eating out is cheaper than buying food in the supermarket...

Refried beans are one of my favorite foods. Within the canned food variety, at least. I love them! However, I can buy this specific brand of refried beans for 35-50 CENTS in America. That's roughly 50 yen.. That is a price increase of 1000% here. One thousand percent. I mean, wtf?!

Actually refried beans are rare here. I've only seen them in three different stores, two of them international supermarkets and the other one Costco (also international of course). Both times in Tokyo, they were this price, and both times I left without any of my beloved refried beans. I love mexican food. I love it so much!

Some food in Japan is crazy expensive, that's for sure. I only show pictures of the worst examples. Before I moved here, it never even occured to me that I wouldn't be able to buy mexican food and there were no Taco Bells accessible to the public (There is supposedly one on the American AFB, but even though I am an american citizen, I am not allowed on it by myself. Fair it is not. Poo on them.)

Tonight I just came back from a mexican restaurant with Eda (I call it mexican, but it's just El Toritos, which is yes, the same American chain prevalent in the SW, and yes their food is poser mexican), so I win over the expensive beans. It's my victory tonight, expensive can of beans (of doom!). Laugh while you can!!!!! Mwahahaha!!

In a bit more than a week, I'm going to be on the Atsugi Naval Base with my family. Shall I report on the food that they have over there? XD I know from past experience that stuff in the military bases tend to be cheaper.

There is a Costco somewhere in Chiba or Tokyo. Find it. Buy in bulk. it's cheaper. ^_^

I'll ask my friend in Chiba on where it is specifically if you need it.

I've already been to the closer Costco (not in Chiba, on the other side), as I said in my post. ^^

But the sucky thing is, it's really inconvenient to go to Costco without a car. I can't carry enough stuff home to make the trip (more than $15 round trip train fare, plus more than 30 min of walking) worth it.

"wtf, Tokyo food is SO expensive"

I was thinking about that today, when I bought 3 pounds of soba noodles for $2.50 and fresh yellowtail imported from Asia for $2 a pound.

There are numerous large Korean supermarkets here in the Silicon Valley which have become an essential part of my life. A very large part of the supermarket is turned over to Korean-made foods primarily geared to the Japanese market... the big difference being that you can actually buy them here for cheap!

I mean, how much would this meal cost in Japan?!

1 bundle of cold soba noodles with soba tsuyu - 25 cents
topped with a 9 oz. grilled yellowtail fillet - $1 ($1.99 a pound)
seasoned with ponzu sauce - 5 cents
garnished with seasoned sesame seaweed slices, bonito flakes, and ground ginger - 10 cents.

So, how much do you think that $1.40 meal would cost to prepare in Tokyo?!

Really, it seems to me that the absurd food prices must have something to do with the cost of real estate being so high, and the general high cost of living... you'd think that there'd be a lot of people running businesses out of car trunks, bringing in inexpensive imports for resale. Hm.
