I promised it... a little update on the real me! =^___^= Yes, I live! =D This post is for all of my real life friends mainly, many of whom have been asking how I'm doing. =^_^= Anyone else is welcome to read too if you'd like. ^^

I'll start out with an amusing tale about my manager..
Part of our job is that when the students request a progress report from the staff, if we were the last teacher to give them a lesson that day, we have to give the office staff a quick review of how the student is doing. Easy enough.. ^^ But it's utterly amusing when you hear a conversation like this about why a student failed her level advancement test.

There are four people in the staff lounge: Me, my AT Glen (AT is like a branch manager), Viren (another teacher), Hiroko (our newest japanese office staff member):
Glen: [about why she failed] We did a roleplay where she had to use the appropriate level of politeness. I was an old man who gave her my train ticket, and she was suposed to thank me. She only said 'thank you' very quickly.
Hiroko: Okay... *looks confused*
Glen: I did her this big favor, and saying only 'thank you,' is kinda rude. She could have said, 'thank you so much, sir,' or 'I really appreciate this, thank you so much.'
Hiroko: Ah, I see...
Glen: She was rude because of what she said. It's a little like if I'd said, 'hey, fuck you!'
Hiroko: fookyoo?
Me: ...............*bursts out laughing*
Viren: *looks surprised*
Hiroko: *looks at Glen and then at us* Uhhh...
Glen: *is actually pulling off not laughing and starts to explain again that she was rude*
Me: *keeps on laughing because Hiroko was so cute!* Hiroko, you can't repeat that to the student.
Hiroko: okay.....

Later on, I told her why it was not something that she could repeat. XD;;; nomg Hiroko is so cute! I also had a conversation about Glen and the appropriateness of swear words in the classroom. XD; It's not appropriate.... at least you think so until you find the phrase "Go to hell" in a level 2 lesson. XD;;;;; That's not all. I've found so many! Some of them are in the new texts and they're disguised as puns or names. It's hilarious.. to me, anyways. XD;

So, what have I been up to outside all of the tenimyu and tenipuri things? The answer is........... working. I work fulltime and commute about an hour each way, and I RP when I get home, or watch anime/tv. I need the 'me' time, in any case. But there is more to my life than I say....

I get most of my socialization hanging out with my friends, talking to the people that I work with, or my roommate. I'm really sad that she's leaving in a few days. Tomorrow is my only day off this week, and we're going to go to Shinjuku and karaoke for a while, and then switch the internet into my name. ^^ She's going back to America on Saturday, and we're getting a new roommate from Australia this Thursday. Should be interesting. I hope she's nice.. But I've decided to move out as soon as I can afford to, to someplace in a better location and hopefully with a better price. ^_^ Price may be hard to find, but a better location is a definite. I want something close to Shinjuku, please! I will probably end up in a guesthouse.......... >.>;; But they're cheap, and very good about not requiring a deposit. ^^ Yay <3

Eda and Erin are the people that I spend the most time hanging out with. I see them pretty much every week, and we do various things. Eating out, maybe seeing one of those various events, or talking about vacationing to china or talking about our doujinshi or whatnot. We're planning a trip out of town on March 6th to see a spring festival. It's just a day trip, but I'm really excited!! =^__^= My first cultural thing! <33 I'm so very lucky to have made such good friends here! My life has really been happy recently, due almost entirely to my friends. ^_^

I've met SO many awesome people in Tokyo! In addition to the lovely people mentioned above, Aya, Miyu, and Nicole top off the list! There are more too! I finally met Kira during the BukiMyu time, and it was awesome to finally get to do so! Angelamori, please come back to visit soon! Bethany, I want you to come back to hang out more! I have some friends from the US planning to visit.. James and Jess! I can't wait to see you two! We will smush you into my cramped little apartment! =D Or probably cramped little room! XD

I want to buy a camera. I am going to look at them tomorrow I think. I want something cheap that can take decent snapshots, since mine has pretty much died. It still works, but it takes forever to take a picture, and even in the daytime while looking at non-moving objects it will not focus correctly. >.< It also eats batteries like nothing else. I have to be careful with money like whoa, but my budget is that if I can find a digicam that meets my expectations for under $100 then I will buy it. It can't hurt to look! I won't go over that though. I just can't afford it, I don't want to be tight this month.. I want something small and portable. =^_^=

I have become REALLY irritated with NOVA recently. Yes, the job is easy. Supremely so. And it pays well. But I am running into ALL SORTS of problems getting days off. They make it pretty hard, because I've never ever heard of a company that won't take requests for days off and probably give them to you. According to my AT, this is against NOVA policy, so the only way for me to get days off is to switch working days temporarily with another teacher that has those days off. So basically, you can only do it at the whim of the other person, and if they don't show up for your shift, then it comes off of YOUR paycheck still. Now how stupid is that? It still needs to be approved of by the area manager, but it's up to you to make sure that the other person shows up. WTF, people?? Yeah, anyways... communication between me and the AAM (Jill the bitch, as I've mentioned before) is not the best atm. Somehow she manages to make herself sound cheerful when she's saying something bad. X_x Hate her. Really can't stand her!

I love my students though. Most of them are really cool people. =^_^=

One good thing is that I had my mid-contract review last week, and I came out with outstanding marks! Lots of great comments from the head teacher of the area that did my observation. I was happy over that. He was great, and hilarious to talk to. ^^ My only problem was that I had 'poor' attendance. Because I was sick twice, and for 6 days in total. It's not my fault, and actually Jill did that rating, but whatever. I was really sick those times.. >.> Trust me, I'd rather have not been.

So, last tuesday............... I was stopped in the train station by, uh... a modelling agent. O.o I've been asked SO many times since I've gotten here why I'm not modelling. I am not in shape, and I couldn't ever model in america, but... apparently I've got the looks for it here. It's so weird to think of that. It might be weird, but I am definitely going to set up a meeting with the agency. I want a new job. I am very very interested. Don't worry, I'll be careful, but if it's legit and I try it out a few times and like it, I'm switching careers while I'm here. YESH no more NOVA!!!

And yesterday morning.......... I set fire to the apartment. Sort of. It was really really frightening. I was going to cook gyoza for breakfast. They're so good when you fry them in oil! So I put a small frying pan on the stove like I've done before, put about an inch of oil in it and turned on the flame. I watch it for a second and then walk across the room to replace the trash bag that's getting full. I swear it's been like.... less thana minute since I put the oil on to heat, and I hear this 'whoosh!!!' behind me. What is happening???? I turn to look and lo and behold the pan had caught on fire! The oil was burning! And I rush over in kind of a numb fright. What do I do? I mean, it's a grease fire!!!! Not something easy to put out! Not when it's fed by a frying pan full of oil, that is!!!!!!!!!!! O_O The oil is already a burning column of fire by the time that I scamper across the room! Well I can't just throw it outside.............. I turn off the heat and try to blow on it. Riiiiiiiiiiiiiight, that makes it worse. As if a pillar of fire can get worse.. >.> It's almost reaching the fan above it after a few seconds, and I'm like...... *panicpanic* But even in a panic I guess I have a cool head, because I cleared the sink of dishes and quickly transferred the pan and pillar of fire there. I flicked on the tap and ran across the room......... Good thing that I did! It erupted in a huge fireball!!! But then it was gone. OMG was I relieved!! I checked and double and triple checked the cupboards above the faucet and anything around it to make sure that nothing was burning. But thankfully, there was no crisis and I refrained from burning down my NOVA apartment. I'm a little apprehensive about cooking with oil now, though..... >.>;;

Anyways........ I really, really enjoy life here in Japan. There are a LOT of things that I miss about America, a large part of which is my friends. I miss my friends soooo much. T_T I keep up with them a bit on livejournal, but many of the people that I want to read about the most don't post often. I miss being a constant part of their lives and always able to hang out with them. I really, really need to vacation back there somewhere. I am planning right now on staying in Tokyo for several years at the least (and likely for a long long time.. I want to become fluent and really want to give a shot at being a mangaka..), but I miss you all so much. If there was anything that I could do, it would be buy you all plane tickets here so that you can come to hang out again. I would love to be able to show my best friends around Tokyo. And to introduce you to the friends that I've made here. Then we could travel to Thailand or something. =^__^=

I also miss candy. I miss SO much American food it's crazy. Especially Reese's Peanut Butter cups and cans of refried beans. The kind that cost $0.33 at home, but cost ~¥500 here. Insane.... o.o Save me!

I also want a pet. I don't know what, but I'll see if there's anything that's allowed in these places. Like a hamster or fish or a little lizard or something.

I'm trying to draw again. It's getting there. o.o I haven't forgotten how, but I've been so busy that it seems like I didn't have any time. I need to get a desk! =D

That's all for now! Wow, it was longer than I meant it to be! =^__^= *hugs to all of her friends* I MISS YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aww....the more I read your entries the more I want to come there to live.
Model *_* Yaya yay urraaahh I told you you could ^O^O^
But be careful, there are so many bad people waiting only for a pretty gaijin girl... >_< Oh and if you become famous introduce me some good looking male models *_*
Anyway, when you go there be sure to bring some friend with you!
I'm so happy to have met you too *hugs*
And...a..fire?^O^
I know the feeling..it's happened to me too, I was trying to cook something with my friend and..the result was her hair burned (the pillar of fire went directly in her hair) ...eheh it was just a little but woah we were scared^O^
Take care and don't stress too much for NOVA, I'm sure you'll find someway to solve the situation!

*huggles* I'm not quite sure how gyoza cooks, exactly, but an inch of oil does seem like quite a bit... ^^; But it's okay. Everything's fine now, and that's the important part. *nodnods*

Speaking of food, would you like me to send you some Skyline chili? It's on sale here, and maybe that will help with the wanting of food from home (although there is no Skyline in WA, granted...)

If the modeling thing works out, that'd be really awesome! :D I'm crossing my fingers for you. ^__^

As an aside, I've been asked to learn Japanese for work. (There's a Toyota plant near the hotel, and they fly in a lot of big wigs from the Japanese HQ.) Hopefully it will go well, I have one of those quick-study books from Barnes and Noble... but I might email you and ask for a little help now and then, if it's okay. ^^;;;;;

But thanks for the update! I hope Jill gets the pine tree out of her butt and things get to be a little bit less icky for you... (but I'd still take the modeling job if everything checks out ok. XD)

I'm glad to hear you are happy and meeting so many fun people! I can't wait until May!! I'll try to remember to bring Reeses and refried beans for you =^_^=

And... oil fire: cover the pan. Preferably with something airtight and not plastic. Water is probably the worst thing you could put on that. Trust me, I was a clumsy chemistry student. ;P

Jess makes awesome Gyoza. You two should compare recipes.

She also makes awesome Katsu-don. Depending on the price of Pork there perhaps she can make some for us.

Do you have a large wok?

I'm guessing Ton-katsu sauce is not very expensive in Japan.

Next week is the largest LAN party this house has seen, April is Sakura-con, then May is out trip to Tokyo. Sounds like the start of a great year.

I got my phone bill today. With the internal plan I added to my cell phone (something I added just for you BTW), calling Tokyo is only $0.21 a minute. The retarded operator told me it would be over $0.80 a minute. Now that I know the exact price, I won’t feel as rushed talking to you (sorry about that). Expect another phone call. When are the best times to call?

How about a golden hamster for pet? They do make good companions ^^ Or u know a tamagochi?

My mom usually dumps gyoza into soup with some spring onions...it's really nice. But frying it needs attention because it burns easily ^^;;;

Holy crap that fire incident sounds like it was scary. @_@ If it ever happens again, remember that to put out a grease fire you have to smother it. Water and/or blowing on it will only make it worse. ^^;; [as you discovered. >_>]

I'll ask my Dad about his PayPal account! I keep forgetting to [about sending you more Reese's and such.] ^_^

I'll see if I can get out there, really. I want to see you [and Japan!] soooo badly. <333 It'll just take some time.
Chiakichiaki777 on February 21st, 2005 11:19 pm (UTC)
In Japan, they like any American. You can do fine in any line of modeling if you look vaguely American or English. XD

I loved that convo. I wish we had stuff like that.

I also miss candy. I miss SO much American food it's crazy. Especially Reese's Peanut Butter cups and cans of refried beans.

Mm, that reminded me of yesterday when another person and I were putting up boxes and boxes of Peeps. A little army of evil marshmallow chickens... (and rabbits, lots of rabbits)

Oh, yes, *Haven-tags you, runs off*

*will proceed to go all-out geek on you now*

Water and oil don't mix, so the water will cause the other molecules to spread out over a larger area, thus increasing the flame. One would generally suggest dirt for such a fire, but as most people don't keep bags of that near their stoves (and for some reason, I do), the next logical step is the ever-loving fire extinguisher. [/geekness]

And I'd send you candy, if I trusted my mail lady. ^^v Stupid crazy old hag...

I'm so proud of you. It's such a wonderful thing that you've been offered to do. And to teach and be able to live there and be able to make plans of living there indefinitely. You've had a really good life Hi-chan... and I'm very happy for you. Am glad you have made many good friends and might stay longer too.

Eek~! The fire thing sounds scary. Glad that it came out allright and you aren't a burned smoldering thing all dead. ; *thuds* Be careful with that oil now. Don't have much more advice than that since I'm not accustomed to cooking with oil either. We had a big gas leak a while back... Ugh.

If you decide to go for a modeling thing, be very very careful. Make sure they treat you well and don't make you go on some crazy diet. >__> Ugh. I think the job with teaching sounds really good, I just wonder if the custom is different since its Japanese based -- with the sick days and having days off and all. Am glad you're still updating. You should continue to do so. I really love reading your posts, and I doubt you think of me much but I miss you.

And I'll try one of these days to send you some candy!! Heh. Reese's might die on the way there, but I could look for other things, tell me what you want and I'll try for it. They're not 33 cents here, but they're still under 2 dollars primarily. ^^ *stops babbling now and taking up space* Ja ne ~

I highly recommend trying out the life in Tokyo. It's a good experience! ^_^ I don't really feel like I should be recommending Tokyo to anyone who wants to have a lot of free time, but please, check out their webpage and make a decision for yourself. ^_^

omg. Like you should totally model. *bimboes a bit*

I understand the glee of finding swear words. I'm starting to find them in my Japanese notes, and I giggle like all hell to myself. ^_^;; Coz, you know, sensei's like "never say 'kimi'! 'kimi' is rude!"

<3s.

Oh, and btw, I think I have a friend who's going over to Japan and can get me the DVD. So... you won't have to buy it. ^_^;; Sorry for the bother!

(also, yeah, you don't need that much oil... you only need enough to cover the bottom of the pan.. >.> Don't blow yourself up!! It would be too sad..)
