My new favorite ending ever..

About the end of Fullmoon wo Sagashite... Only look if you've seen it or you don't mind getting it spoiled for you. ^__^

I couldn't help crying through most of the last episode.. and for a while after it ended. I love happy endings like this.. though it was bittersweet in a few ways..

What's been happening so far.. Takuto and Meroko decided to save Mitsuki's life, no matter the cost. They wrote their names into Meroko's handbook on the page where things appear that are trying to prevent Mitsuki's death. But because Takuto remembered his past life, he's ben condemmed to turn into a ghost. When he takes the flower of forgetfulness, it screws everything up and he can't turn into a ghost anymore, at least according to God. During the concert when Mituki is singing as Fullmoon, Takuto finally disappears after forgetting everything, and Meroko can't do anything to stop it. She then sees the black cloud come to take Mitsuki, and stands in it's way. She disappears along with it, nearly making Mitsuki stop singing.. But she doesn't, and starts to transform back to her normal self in the middle of the song. Thanks to Izumi, who does the only non-selfish thing that I've ever seen, puts an illusion on her so that she looks like Fullmoon still... it's his own way of being nice.. I was already crying, but this made me cry even harder... They never tell you who Izumi was, though I still think that he may have been Eichi, because he does have feelings after all..

At the concert, Fullmoon says that she's going to be going on a leave for a while, and the crowd supports her.. even Madoka does, when she figures out that Fullmoon's life is on the line. Mitsuki makes it through the concert and is rushed to the hospital for her operation, where Wakaoji says that if she makes it past midnight, then fate has been changed. Her heart rate drops three minutes before midnight, and he works hard to keep her stable.

It is during this time that Meroko and Takuto have been called by 'god' (they don't name her as god but it's very implied) and are being sentenced. Takuto can't remember a thing, other than that he has somewhere that he needs to be. But he can't remember who it is. Meroko materializes and calls Mitsuki's name. Takuto knows the name and says that he has to be there to save her life, even though he doesn't remember anything about her. He still loves this Mitsuki and asks that his life be traded for hers. He dies right there, and Mitsuki is saved at the stroke of midnight.

Meroko is distraught and asks to take Takuto's place and be turned into a ghost instead. God asks why, because Takuto doesn't even know who she is. Meroko says that that is okay, because she would do anything for the person that she loves.

It is during this time that Izumi is flying around with Jonathan. Jonathan wants to know where Meroko and Takuto are, and Izumi says that they are being punished for trying to change fate and defying the law of the shinigami. He says that the only thing he knows is that he is never going to see Meroko or Takuto again. Jonathan asks what their punishment is, and Izumi tells him that it is to remain shinigami. That in itself is a punishment for giving up on life, and his new punishment is that he must remain a shinigami, which is a miserable existence. I think that this finally shows that Izumi has a heart.. I would like to know what happens to him after this.. maybe a sequel, though I doubt it.

Now it's back to Mitsuki, six weeks later. She is better now and out of the hospital. She spends a lot of her time missing Meroko and Takuto.. their absence hit her hard.

Now we find out what happened to them. God told Meroko that she had shown true love, and so had Takuto. She said that many people felt these emotions, but so few acted on them, and they were two of those. She was impressed that they would give up their own existences for that of another person. Mitsuki as well had shown great courage in defying fate. therefore, Meroko and Takuto had lost the qualifications to be shinigami. They were forever banished from the shinigami world. Takuto would get a new chance at life, picked right up from where he left off. He was returned to the living with all of his memories up to the point of the accident. But although he didn't remember Mitsuki or Meroko per se, they still lived on in his heart. Meroko was turned into an angel, and now she watches over Takuto. Izumi is still watching over Mitsuki now and then, to make sure that she is alright, and he finds out that because she doesn't believe that she's dying anymore, she can't see him. He leaves, and that's when a little badly-sewn stuffed Meroko-bunny appears. She's being pulled by the angel Meroko that Mitsuki can't see. Meroko leads Mitsuki to Takuto and they're finally reunited, whereas Meroko leaves them forever.

By this time I was in tears completely. It was so sweet and so sad.. and so pretty. This is one of the best, if not the best ending to any series that I've ever seen! I am a complete sucker for romantic endings, and this didn't disappoint in the slightest. Move over Fushigi Yuugi, this was the best! *sighs happily* I'm not crying anymore, though I think I probably will when I watch this again later. It's just too sweet and perfect. And it didn't feel contrived. Meroko made a beautiful angel.

*sniffles* I've fallen in love with this anime all over again. This is why I love shoujo -- it makes you feel things for the characters.. I mean really really feel things. ^__^
