Some diet recipes and foods straight from Japan and my head♪  
Lately, I've been all about diet, exercise, and making a body that I love instead of one that I want to hide. Although there are certain things that can't be changed without surgery (like boob size, as in growing bigger, for example!), things like losing fat and toning... those are things that almost anyone can do!! It's harder for some than others, but hey.. to be honest, I'm really tired of not liking this or that, and so I decided to do it NOW.

Actually, in the last three years, I've lost about 30 kilos! It's pretty obvious if you look at old (unedited!) pictures of me, and rest assured I never put any of those online! ^^; Though, I am pretty tall, so 30 kilos, while it's a lot, it's not quite the same effect as someone a foot shorter would get. (By the way, I am roughly 10kilos heavier than the "bulky" models who are my height and I'm not underweight. just in case anyone was wondering ^^;;)

I won't get into what I don't like about my body, just rest assured that there are points, and I have been working really, really, really hard to change the ones that don't involve expensive surgery or dental work! Since I love to eat, I wasn't getting anywhere for a while, but now I've figured out a few recipes that (in addition to working out) really help AND leave me full and full of energy!!





Pal Sweet

(It's really cheap here, but also if you want to buy it in person (in Japan), the cheapest I've found is Sun Drug drugstores)

When I looked online, I found out that this is the same as Nutrasweet. Supposedly. Basically, the best invention EVER!

I crave sweet things like no tomorrow, but too much sugar makes me break out, gain weight, and feel tired. With Pal Sweet, I can put it in anything that doesn't require cooking it, and it sweetens it up without any calories! Or at least basically none. There are 3 calories per heaping teaspoonful. Pretty much nothing!

It's made with Aspartame, so if that scares you, then I suggest not to try it. I have no problem with it, so I love this stuff! There are also other low/no calorie sweeteners like lacanto sugar, so I suggest checking out your healthfood store and seeing what you like best! It's a great help while on a diet, but even if I wasn't, I would still use this stuff!




Shirataki

These things are a godsend! Sort of...

Basically, think of them as jelly noodles. They're made from a certain kind of yam. They contain almost no calories. (about 3 calories per 100 grams) They're also pretty much all fiber and all natural, and have basically no flavor :D So.... they're GREAT for when you want to fill up! I used to boil them and cover them with spaghetti sauce for a healthy spaghetti-ish dinner.

HOWEVER. There are two things to consider, and because of them, shirataki might not sit well with some people. One, is that they are, like I said, JELLY(ish). It's like eating tasteless jello wigglers made into noodles. So really, they are nothing like spaghetti and therefore odd to eat with pasta sauce.

Two, they SMELL LIKE FISH. I mean when you open the package, it smells like the docks, or like the fresh fish section of the supermarket. Seriously. It's pretty vile. The smell will go away when you rinse and then boil them (I think it's just the water that they're in, and I don't understand why it smells so bad), but it could really put some people off.

That said, I actually prefer to use them in a dessert!! If you've ever had tapioca in milk/coconut milk, then you know what heaven it can be, right? But FULL of calories!! So I make a different version!


Shirataki "tapioca" dessert

Ingredients:
Shirataki
Your favorite milk (I use whole milk, but if you like thin milk than you can use that of course!)
Low-calorie sweetener (I use Pal Sweet, aka Nutrasweet)
Cinnamon
Vanilla extract

Basically, wash and then boil your shirataki noodles in order to get rid of the vile smell. You will know when it's gone :D After that, let them cool a little and put them into the blender. Add just enough cold milk to cover them (the less the better), and then blend until it's all blended up into tiny pieces. It will look just like tapioca milk! After that, add sweetener, cinnamon, and vanilla to taste. Voila! The only calories are from the milk, so you could eat a giant heaping bowl full of this delicious dessert with less than the calories of a slice of white bread! Cool, right? I don't know why I haven't been doing this for years! (And the fiber really fills you up!)

(I can't find a good link to buy online. I recommend checking at your local market. If you are in Japan, they may have it at a Tokyu supermarket near you, that's where I found mine)

On that note, I ran into this discovery at a nearby supermarket a few weeks ago, and it's saved my life!!

These noodles are made from tofu and gelatin, and just... AMAZING. They have nearly the exact same texture of regular pasta, and taste almost the same too!! I only say "nearly/almost" because I'm sure they taste different, but I can't figure out how! They're DELICIOUS! And better than that, they are 30 calories per pack!! (The package includes salad dressing, 13calories, but I don't eat that). Instead I use the noodles in all kinds of recipes!! And by the way, there is NO weird smell! Actually, they don't really smell at all!

Kimchee

If you like asian food, especially if you like Korean food, then you probably know kimchee! It's a bit on the spicy side, but if you're okay with that, kimchee is one of the best things EVER. :) It's also basically calorie-free, so a great diet food! There are only 18 calories per 100 grams. Best of all, it's delicious!!

Basically, kimchee is fermented cabbage in spices. :D But don't let that turn you off! Miso, beer, wine, and a lot of other things are fermented, too, after all! It's so good and so healthy and just yuuuuuuuum! I eat it raw sometimes as a snack, and sometimes cook it in dishes of varying yumminess.

Which brings me to my next recipe!!

Scrambled kimchee ala noodles!

Ingredients:
1-2 eggs (based on your preferences)
150-200 g of kimchee
Salada de noodles, or tofu noodles of whatever variety you can find

Scramble up your eggs (you don't need milk or oil, just crack the eggs into a hot nonstick frying pan and move them around till they're scrambled), and then add the kimchee. Cook 1-2 minutes while stirring, just until it's warm and smells too good to wait. Open the noodles and rinse them under cool water and strain them until they're mostly dry. Put them into a bowl with the egg-kimchee mixture, mix it up, and dig in! Enough to make your stomach so full that it hurts, and it's only about 100 calories (160 if you have two eggs)!! If you feel adventurous, then it's also delicious to throw in some chopped onion, peppers, or whatever other veggie you love. OMG... heaveeeeeen!! If you have a really big tummy, then you can double the batch and pig out until you're in a food coma and your belly looks as if you're 6 months pregnant, and still not gain weight. :D How cool is that??!!

Ohohohooo! I was looking for something healthy for me, and this turned out to be a gold mine! Actually, it's pretty much unheard of in Japan, but I finally found it at a decent price on Amazon.jp of all places! (See above for link)

Basically, I grind it up and throw it in my yogurt at breakfast time, with some fresh fruit and pal sweet. YUM! You can put it in all sorts of things. :3

Speaking of which, right now my favorite breakfast is 100g of fat-free yogurt with one twp flax seed, pal sweet to taste, and a diced fresh peach. I'm so happy that peaches are in season right now!!




Peaches

It's peach season, and coincidentally, peaches and raspberries are my favorite fruits! I could seriously live on peaches!!! In addition to plain or in yogurt, I LOVE to cut one up, pour a tiny bit of milk and pal sweet over it, and eat a totally guilt-free dessert! Mmmmmm!!! It's like heaven in a bowl. :3 TO DIE FOR! ALso great in oatmeal, etc etc etc! Great anywhere and anytime that you have a napkin to wipe up the sweet juice!


And my last current staple:

CABBAGE AND MISO. ♥





Are you hungry and need a snack? Want a simple lunch that fills you up without using any calories? If you do, then this is great!! (As long as you like miso paste!)

Miso paste is what's used to make miso soup. It tastes like.... I guess, well, salty! A little like soy sauce, which makes sense because they're made pretty much of the same things!

Anyway, take your favorite green leafy crunchy vegetable and dip it in miso paste and eat! YUM! It's delicious, trust me!!

I alternate between cabbage, lettuce, and hakusai (chinese cabbage, in the picture above). Just tear off a bite-sized piece of leaf and lightly touch it to the miso paste, and it picks up enough flavor to become amazingly heavenly delicious! Again, you can eat a huge stomachful without any real calories! In general, about 5 grams of miso paste is enough per 100 grams of leafy yumminess.



Well.... those are my current staples/often-eaten foods! I still eat a mix of other foods of all kinds, depending on the day, but these low-calorie treats have really helped me shape up! I'll definitely still be eating them even after I achieve my goal!

OMG... that shirataki dessert recipe! I have all this shirataki that I don't know what to do with (hard to make yummy pasta with them...) but I have all these ingredients in my cupboard! I HAVE TO TRY THIS!
