Diet and stuff~♪
Shitenhouji socks!!

Tomorrow I'm getting my picture taken for my artist profile, so I suppose I should watch what I eat today! Actually, I do that every day. It's hard getting in shape!!! But I'm trying not only to tone up (lose unwanted fat, build up pretty but not unreasonable muscles), but also improve my skin (somehow this isn't working..) and my digestion, and overall health.

A kind of gross thing that I've learned: You should be going #2 at least twice a day, and within two hours of a normal meal!! Sometimes this happens, but not so much lately. If you don't it's a sign of a bad diet/consipation/problems. Did anyone else know this? I didn't use to have any problems, but when I started eating rice/bread a lot (switching to a japanese diet), I started with problems. I suppose this is why laxatives are a HUGE seller here. Any drugstore that you go to will have huge displays with tons of different brands. Home mini-enema kits are also really cheap and huge sellers. I had never thought of an enema before, but after researching find htat they are really good for you! Umm, this is kinda gross isn't it? ^^; Well, in any case, I am curious about enemas, but I will not take laxatives unless there is a medical reason. Laxatives are generally bad for you, right? At least that is what I read. Plus, well... you know, the results can be uncomfortable! Does anyone know anything about any of this?

Sorry for all of the gross talk!! Well, I've been busy with projects as usual, as well as trying to get myself on track health-wise. It feels like an uphill battle. Does anyone want to share their stories of personal health battles? Especially if you are currently trying hard to get in better shape/lose weight/be healthier/etc.. We can cheer each other on!! :)

Enough about that! ^^;;; I do have a few random pictures to share~~

I saw these aaaaages ago and couldn't resist! I put them in a drawer though and forgot about them until now, lol.

I made a new friend! XD

I thought this car looked like a rocket ship XD

A few random shots while walking around town when it was warm out..

A random chibi of a friend and me. Of course, she doesn't really get mad like that!

My first attempt ever at making sushi! (for work)

Another new friend!

This was from Tiffany.. it's so me, isn't it?!

Yesterday was Hannah's birthday party (today is her birthday, happy birthday!), so we did karaoke!

Tiffany and Adele :D

And here is the second-to-last meme entry!

Day 01: 10 things about you
Day 02: 10 things you love
Day 03: 10 things you hate
Day 04: 10 things you want to say to one person
Day 05: 10 wishes
Day 06: 10 items you can’t live without
Day 07: 10 important people
Day 08: 10 of your favorite songs

Day 09: 10 ways to win your heart
Day 10: Final 10 words.

Day 09: 10 ways to win your heart

By the way, this is just theoretical, and not necessarily romantic!

1. Write a song for me and sing it to me. =^^=
2. Draw me a picture ^^
3. Write a story/poem for me ^^ (I like creativity!)
4. Say something nice about me other than my appearance (but only if it's true!!!)
5. Bake me something!
6. Spend a lot of time with me..

Sorry to be boring, but I think I covered almost everything there! =^^=

Ja ne! Until later!!!!

PS: Commenttttts!!! ToT I miss getting comments.. where is everybody?!?!

I don't think laxatives are necessarily bad for you they're just supposed to cure constipation. I don't think they'll make you go #2 though unless you know... there's actually something there to pass. If you're not wanting to take laxatives drink prune juice. Eat bran. All of those will soften stool. Just keep an eye on it, make sure you don't overdo it or you'll get diarrhea.

Lovely conversation XD
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on May 30th, 2011 05:06 am (UTC)
I know, isn't it? XDXD

I have eaten prunes on occasion, but I'm not fond of them.. I'll try prune juice instead! :D I found that berries work pretty well, too! (They are just so expensive it makes me weep. ^^;)

Unfortunately my favorite foods (milk/cheese) supposedly cause constipation! Now we can't have that! XD

Grape juice works too, just don't overdo it.

I've noticed people are pretty scarce. Maybe because of LJ being slow / graduations / summer vacations starting / people looking for summer jobs / etc?

Anyway, you know I've got stories about health battles, but it would take me forever to write it all up at this point |3 I've lost 30 pounds in the last two months, though, and am trying really hard to stick with it.
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on May 30th, 2011 05:15 am (UTC)
Yeah, I had wondered if it had anything to do with school.. or maybe just because people migrated to other places like tumblr? Lj never really seemed to take off with the general public, though I'm not entirely sure why.

I've been reading about your health battles... I always wish that there was something that I could do to help, since I hate to see a friend in such pain/inconvenience. I guess all I can do is say GANBATTE!! and try to inspire by working on my own health.
Momokoxelloss_poo on May 30th, 2011 05:07 am (UTC)
If you tend to use laxatives too much, it can cause you to be unable to go without them. So its definitely good to be cautious about over using them.
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on May 30th, 2011 05:16 am (UTC)
Yeah, I read a lot about that. I avoid them because of the same issues.... I have a box of semi-strong laxatives aimed at women, but the same thing happened every time. So if I took them once, then I had to keep taking them or I wouldn't be able to go for days! It was horrible. Never again!! Not unless I have to!

I'm also dieting/trying to get toned, and about 6 months ago I started taking Niacin, which is a type of B Vitamin. It increases your metabolism and actually prevents heart attacks, and lowers your cholesterol. I used to take it only once a day, but my body got used to it, now I take it twice a day- one with each meal. It started making me go poop at LEAST once, sometimes twice a day. And not to be gross, but it's like...I feel like I lose 2 pounds every time I go. And it doesn't cause diarreah the way laxatives do, and it's natural.

The only bad side effect it could possible have is giving you a red flush, but it can be avoided if you take it only while you eat. The non-flush type doesn't work, apparently. (I noticed the difference) and if you get the flushing cheeks, taking an aspirin is supposed to counter it...But I wouldn't recommend taking aspirin every day.
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on May 30th, 2011 05:12 am (UTC)
Oh my, I've never heard of that!! I'm going to read up on it some more! If it seems like it's okay with my medication, then I'll try and pick some up! Thanks a lot!
Momokoxelloss_poo on May 30th, 2011 05:35 am (UTC)
It would depend on the aspirin you're taking. I've been told before that taking baby aspirin (low-dose aspirin) can be healthy to take once a day. Of course, if you're taking full-strength aspirin, not so much.

I'm in a very early stage of shaping up... Starting to play weekly badminton games (i'm trying to up it to 3 times a week). I hope to eventually start jogging too but my schedule is always so full! I always take it for granted that since I walk my dog twice a day I don't have to do much exercise... but that's it, I just walk my dog twice a day, I don't sweat at all with him.

I do not intend to drastically control my diet though... I just love to eat! Instead, I am focusing on smaller portions, taking in less carbs and getting used to snacking on fruits and veggies (such as apples, oranges, cucumber, carrots) when I'm feeling peckish. If there are new things to try (such as, a cake a friend made, chocolates and such) I will still eat them. Yes, I am greedy!

I have a friend who is doing a strict no-carb diet. Yes she went down a few sizes, congratulations are in order, but it's no fun to go out with her anymore. She would ask me out for lunch and I'd be thinking about restaurants that serve salads and non-carbs, and she'd go "oh, go ahead and go to any restaurant you like. I'll just watch you eat!" ... way to douse my mood with cold water, I'd much rather not go out with her now, if she keeps it that way.

I'm not so sure of supplements for dieting, I haven't done much research in that part of the picture, so... no help there... won't the pills cause a certain reliance then you can never get off the pill, or something like that??
Sarahanimeartist62 on May 30th, 2011 05:47 am (UTC)
enema's are ok for short use as a lot of them are just made with mineral oil, and more just kinda lubricate so it is easier to go where as laxative stimulate your body to have a movement, that is where you can get into trouble using them as your body will stop its self from normally stimulating its self to go. The best thing to go is get a high fiber cereal or you can even eat some pro-biotic yogurt, you need to eat more foods that pull water into you stool, which then makes the stool softer and thus easyer to go.

I'm still around... though lurking a lot more than usual. It's been busy around these parts.

I've managed to go from 250lb (113kg) to 170lb (77kg) in about a year and a half. The biggest changes is that I pretty much cut out ice cream and ate about 1/4 to 1/3 less food at each meal. That, in addition with the new job keeping me on my feet and moving around for 8 hours a day really helped. (I wore a pedometer to work once, and found out that during a regular 8-hour shift I walked the equivalent of 2 miles around the store!)

I don't need to lose weight but I need to lose my stomach fat. I wasn't able to fit some of my jeans when I tried them on and didn't want to spend money on more jeans XD Also, I have small breasts so having a big stomach doesn't look good. I just started to try to exercise everyday, even if it's only for a little bit. I'm also trying to be in the correct sitting, standing, and walking position so the fat won't pile up easily. Of course, I need to pay more attention to what I eat.

And here I was thinking constipation was a "lady problem." It never occurred to me it might be something about Japanese diet, probably because I assumed a Japanese diet was generally healthier than an American one. I have the reverse problem. (•_• ; ) (And, again, I thought that was a "gentleman problem.") But, yeah, they say constipation is bad for the skin.

I tore the meniscus in my left knee a few years ago, and in order to keep it from getting worse, I walk with a cane. That and general aging have led me to grow, erm, "love handles," which is pretty shocking, since I have been thin my whole life. I know I need to exercise more, but it's hard to find exercise that doesn't make my knee hurt.

So--confession time--I bought a Slendertone. Goofy, I know, but it actually works if you use it properly and conscientiously.

*sigh* It was all so easy before thirty.

I don't remember seeing any in Japan but rhubarb is a good natural laxative. I've seen pills of rhubarb to cure constipation and they're 100% natural (only used them once, and it worked).

I've found that consuming a large amount of vegetables really helps. Broccoli or bell peppers, basically anything that is high in fiber. Rather than consume pills or powders, changing your diet to include more fruits and veggies indeed helps a great deal. Especially if you don't want to take a laxative to help.

Prune juice is alright - although I've never been a fan. I've tried mixing prune juice with sprite (a friend claimed it makes it taste like rootbeer - but it doesn't), or other ways to help me consume it easier. But like I said previously, I just changed my diet to help counteract the Japanese diet. Only use laxatives when you *really* need them.
Firsa Asahiasahifirsa on May 30th, 2011 08:29 am (UTC)
I heard something else a bit gross, but as it pertains to the topic: If you go and have #2 it's supposed to be covered by protective slime if it's healthy. So if you have to use a lot of paper afterwards = no good. If you have to use next to none = very good.

I've never used laxatives, but bananas and chicken soup usually help immensely with my digestion.
sailorstarsun: smilesailorstarsun on May 30th, 2011 09:03 am (UTC)
I've heard laxatives can cause dehydration, which makes sense.

And along those lines, I've found drinking more water makes the, er... bathrooming stuff easier. ::nod nod::

Good luck!
kakibellkakibell on May 30th, 2011 10:36 am (UTC)
I've actually had to go to a doctor for this. They actually told me that it's not just twice a day, you should go as often as you are having meals in a day. I used drugstore kanpoyaku ten years ago and that helped me get regular, but some laxatives out there create a dependency issue, as many of them get less effective as your body gets used to them. And as someone else said, some of them do cause dehydration, which is not good for your skin either.

What I'm using now is a product called Isogol. I have never had a product work this well. I highly recommend it. It's basically fiber in an easy to mix powder drink and doesn't taste horrible. The regular flavor is acerola and the plus version is cranberry. The plus version is truly amazing (it includes the cultures in yogurt), but it's also expensive.

There are several foods that I recommend for you. One is yogurt. If you get the stuff with cultures in it and have it with every meal, some of your digestive issues will be solved. It is also said that having yogurt regularly will prevent some of the side effects of dieting (plateauing/nutrient loss). Also, be sure to eat soy products, as this will keep your female hormone levels up and keep those curves beautiful. Vitamin C is also an ABSOLUTE necessity for beautiful skin and is in many fruits. I'm sure you know the value of green vegetables, but don't forget that many Japanese root vegetables are also high in fiber and are fairly cheap to buy. I highly recommend lotus root (renkon) and burdock (gobo). Avoid processed foods and always choose whole grains over white grains. If you need recipes, let me know.

Don't forget to stretch and do regular body shaping massages as well. Most of those bikini models in Japan swear by body shaping massages. They describe these in AnAn and other beauty magazines/books. Seriously, I've read so much stuff on beauty and health over the years, I could probably write my own book on it. If you have any questions, please ask away.

Re: nice
I think perhaps your body goes into starvation mode if you eat under 1,200 calories a day. Basically, it will hold on to fat and go after muscle instead. I really applaud your discipline but please, be careful!

I started using moisturisers ad facial masks with green tea in it and also started using Aloe Vera gel religiously day and night before applying moisturiser. I've noticed a huge improvement to my skin :3 Aloe Vera is very good for skin improvement, not just for after sun care!! I have sensitive skin, and oil imbalance, so I have to be careful not to use heavy moisturisers. My skin won't absorb it and that makes me break out in spots = . =) Another thing I've been using is facial wash and scrubs with witch hazel in it. Also very good for my skin-type.

I'm not sure what skin-type you are, but always try and match your type with the products you use :3

Also... drinking more water has helped me so much!

My problem, thought it's really a family genetic one (so hard to get rid of), is dark circles under my eyes... I get them bad sometimes, it's rotten.

Every time I travel to japan I get constipated last trip I brought my own high fibre breakfast cereal with me.
Although japanese diet is healthier than western it is lower in fibre,my suggestions would be to eat more legumes, gobo (burdock), veggies, wholegrain breads,Rhubarb, probiotic drinks or yogurts and increase water intake.
I would avoid laxatives has they can become habit forming for your bowel.
I am currently attempting the CSIRO diet have a read about it if you have spare time.
Hope you find something that works for you.

Oh man I had the same problems while I was going to art school in Japan DX I love onigiri and would have one (or two ^^;;) and a green tea for lunch every day... and well yeah it became really difficult! What I ended up doing was trading out the onigiri for something else, and tried to drink only one serving of tea for a few days (which was really hard over there, plus the fact that I love all teas -_-;;), and making sure to drink (lots) more water (I did this instead of my habitual tea) and no soda. I also tried to get in more fiber veggies and fruits during the day.

You can try to get some high-fiber cereals or the such, but it may be hard over there, as I don't think they are doing the high-fiber crazy the US is. Also, consider eating brown rice at home. Brown rice is better for you, and does also help things move along a bit better than white does. It takes longer to cook and tastes different (it's nutty?), but you get used to it after a few times of eating it. I know a few restaurants have the option over there, but they are very far in-between. Also work on your core muscles? I'm doing physical therapy right now, and the focus is on the core muscles with 10 reps twice a day and things have been MOVING, which is good right? Hope that helps ^^

Actually, how much you go depends on your diet and your body. What can be normal for 1 person could be bad for another. It's perfectly normal and healthy for someone to go 3 times a day or 3 times a week. At least, that's what my surgeon told me on my follow up. And you have to remember, Japan's obsessed with health and digestion issues/things/etc. And the rest of Asia, so my friends have told me.

Also, a better suggestion may be stool softeners. They don't make you go like laxatives. But like the name suggests. It does it's job. It's pretty much oil in a capsule and taken with a bunch of water, it works wonders. XD;; I was on it for a week after I had surgery to removed my gallbladder. So, I can vouch that it works.

I know constipation sucks, but I just think lax. and enemas might be a bit forceful, but that's my opinion. If it's healthy to do it once in awhile, by all means go for it.

With my pregnancy, i found I was getting constipated quite a bit. and honestly I wasn't pooping with any real regularity before that either. So i found a really delicious fiber drink mix called benifiber. It's like having a really good juice but it's a drink mix. and when I have a glass or bottle of water with that mixed in, i poop 2 times a day.

akasaka~ that's where I used to live XD *looks at picture*

as for laxatives, I prefer natural remedies like prunes or oranges and orange juice (fresh) and tomatoes and yoghurt :X

generally a balanced diet is good. even when I get constipation (which is either a result of a bad balance diet wise or just plain and simple STRESS) the natural helpers do wonders :3

prunes in sparkling water or prunes with a bit of hot water *nod* I enjoy eating prunes so I don't have a problem :X I do know some people hate prunes or prune juice though?

I think the reason why many japanese have problems is that they do not eat a balanced diet anymore. vegetables are so expensive and people just love to eat meat and the fatty stuff, too (which is why you should eat tomatoes...they have enzymes that break down the fat faster, as does grapefruit~ *random*)

eating full-grain, multi-grain or bran stuff helps too (I dislike white bread... *sigh* there totally is a reason why german bread has been declared a world heritage ~_~ other countries should leaaaaaaarn)

ah I am rambling :X

I think laxatives are a big no (except if there's a big big problem). I try to stay as far from medicines as I can hehe.

It depends on everyone what kind of food makes them go to #2 but I think is the usual, lots of fruit and vegetables and drinking lots of tea and water.

The sushi you made looks yummi! Some day I'd like to learn how to do it myself xD
EQBeccequambonum on May 30th, 2011 09:57 pm (UTC)
yes, laxatives can be dangerous and really mess with your electrolyte balance (we just covered this in one of my nursing classes). Rice is going to be the big cause in your diet right now. Be sure to drink LOTS of water, and eat high fiber fruits and veggies. Exercise also helps to get the bowels moving as well. 1 good BM a day can be sufficient -- I think 2 a day would be ideal! :)

As for this skin, see about cutting down on the dairy and wheat (bead, noodles -- except soba noodles which are made with buckwheat, which is not actually a wheat...). I was having major skin issues (not to mention bloating and headaches) until I stopped eating gluten which is the protein in wheat, rye, barley and spelt. I stopped dairy at the same time (except for yogurt) and wow, my body got back on track! Have been able to add dairy back in and my skin is fine. But if I have anything with wheat, yuck, I break back out again!

Good luck!
shin_no_hanabishin_no_hanabi on May 31st, 2011 02:32 pm (UTC)
most soba you buy is actually a mix of buckwheat and regular wheat. Gotta check the label.

but ya, if you can get old-school soba, its not as bad for you~ ( 'cept those pesky carbs =p )

Great socks!! XD
That's the first time I ever heard about that "rule of thumb" and I'm not sure I should believe it. First of all everybody's metabolism and digestion is different anyways. I suppose it's easy to get digestion problems with all that white rice and white bread and generally all those white carbs here in Japan. I don't like them (apart from white rice) and try to avoid them by all means.
I love my whole-grain products (muesli, whole-grain bread and stuff).
Always good for your digestion are all sorts of fiber!
I suppose eating raw vegetables is good, too.

I could write a whole essay about my "healthy lifestyle" lately and how I'm working on it, but if you're interested just read one of my most recent entries where I mainly talked about working out, but also a bit bout diet.

We're both the same age, somewhat about the same body type. We both have our health conditions and have to take meds. Let's both try hard! ^___^

Actually, it's normal to have one bowel movement any time from one to three days, but if you have a change in your bowel habits that's something to be concerned about.
Laxatives aren't bad if they are used sparingly, but constant use can lead to them being ineffective.
:D I saw Leonard Nimoy and George Takei at Phoenix Comicon!
Neffilineneffiline on May 31st, 2011 11:46 am (UTC)
As others have mentioned I think that everyone is different so I highly doubt it would be normal if everyone on the planet went twice every day. A few years ago there was a commercial on TV saying that you're supposed to go 3 times a day. Some other article I read said once a day is plenty enough. For me it's always been just once a day so this is normal for me. There was a time in the past where I drank Sunny Delight orange juice every morning and for some reason that made me constipated... So I stopped drinking it and everything came back to normal. How weird is that? I'd heard of bread and banana doing that but never juice.

I've always had issue with staying healthy. My parents were never big cooks, my father just cooked whatever wasn't too complicated because my mother always came home late. While they did lots of activities with my brother and I, I was a chubby kid and hated sports. I'm still not a fan of them, but I found that I can exercise and enjoy it by doing dance routines, aerobics, biking and walking. My biggest problem is exercising every day. I have an office job, so while I do walk around at work, I'm sitting down more than so.

Last year I lost 40 lbs and that was thanks to my ex-boyfriend who helped, and also the fact I had to cut out a lot of things because from my diet because I was sick. (I suddenly became intolerant to certain things, potatoes and corn = no chips, no nachos. Also no dairy.) Since I've been able to re-start eating mostly anything (except corn, did you know 1 out of 3 people has a hard time digesting corn? it's the worse thing for your stomach!) I've changed my diet and cut out bread in the morning and evening as much as possible. I've included fruits and veggies a ton more. And last night I cooked with tofu for the first time in a stir fry, it was good :D

But it's hard staying healthy. I have a hard time already, so I can only imagine how you feel in Japan, with all the tiny, skinny japanese girls, and the obsession with being healthy by the japanese in general. You seem to be doing fine though, you look great! :3

i think we've totally started a 'get healthy' group over here xD

as for me, after i discovered i'm gluten intolerant my skin and overall health skyrocketed! it was the magical cure i never expected but it took me .. hmm... like 9 doctors before i found one who figured it out.
i figured it out after going on a crazy hard diet where you work your way down to no milk, no grains, and no sugar. it was just all the veggies and meat i could eat. after about 2 weeks you can start having fruits. i thought i was gonna die and its only a month diet xD but it's the one my doc uses to figure out allergies and such.
needless to say, that month was the most regular i've been my entire life =o if it wasn't for the lack of ice cream or being able to eat out i'd still be on it xD

as for skin, i'm a bad person to ask since i have really difficult skin that i still haven't figured out x.x my diet made it so i have much better skin, but it's still not the smooth, single-toned, pore-less skin i'd like ;.;
besides, your skin looks pretty damn good to me =o /jealous

I have a lot to say about weight loss, considering my struggles and dedication to the cause. Not to mention one of my bridesmaids is a personal trainer, as is my closest cousin. :3
It seems I post a lot about my health journeys on my LJ - if you need suggestions for inspiration and whatnot, I can help.

A few words of warning, though - while incorporating fiber into your diet is great for regularity, laxatives are not. They will tear up your innards and cause rectal bleeding after a while. Not cool.

Also, please be sure to set realistic and healthy goals. Health is more important than being thin, and living as a white girl in Japan seriously fucked up my body image. You can be stronger than that!

I also want to ask, if your stuff is on paper, what kind of materials do you use? It looks sort of like colored pencils & paint.

Hey
I know one way of losing the weight but it's gonna cost you. If you have a Wii all you need is Wii Fit.

Jamiiiie!

I'm just wondering where you get your memes/blogging challenges from? I need to get something like this to get me on LJ again. I'll probably do the one you're doing now XD

Best wishes in your pursuit of being healthier and reaching the right weight/tone-ness for you. You can do it! =D *cheers*

As for health issues... I have a dairy allergy that is a pain. I must avoid all traces of dairy, because I never know when, how much, or what type will trigger an "episode" and the "episode" varies from constipation, abdominal pain, to hives up and down my arms/back, to the more severe respiratory symptoms (aka I can't breathe). So... yeah, absolutely no dairy for me. On top of that, I have gained about 10 pounds since moving out here to Virginia last summer (due to less daily exercise than when I was living in California and walking to work everyday). That means I am now about 30 lbs. above my ideal weight. As a result, I am trying to slim down. Thus far, I have been unsuccessful. It has nothing to do with my diet (I'm vegan) so it is just a matter of increasing the daily exercise. *sigh*

Hello! I found your blog via the Japan Blog List and I have a question for you.

As I am moving to Japan in the coming months I am making a list of places to go and things to do while in Japan. I would like to make a similar list for my blog featuring other Japan bloggers.

All I ask of you is to send a paragraph (or more if you'd like) explaining your favorite part of Japan and why, maybe include a picture of it if you'd like. Just send me an email at kaleyjapan@gmail.com with your reply (or questions) and I'd love to feature you!

Thanks, I look forward to hearing from you!

Those are adorable socks!!!!!

I actually JUST started my work out routine today. I'm doing 10 sit ups, 10 chest stretch thingies (I don't know what they're called), and a belly dance workout in the morning. Then, before I go to bed, I do 10 more sit ups and chest stretches. I'm going to up them by five every month from now on. I can already tell the difference; I was a lot more energetic today than usual.

Good luck, and I know with determination and motivation, we can both succeed! ^_^
