I need your help!! =^-^=
That's right... deciding what to do with this new apartment! =^^=

As you can see, it's pretty bare and boring.. I can't paint the walls or anything, but I was wondering... does anyone have any good decorating ideas? There is one more room, but it's just a tatami room with my clothes in it and stuff.. this main room is my bedroom/entertainment/kitchen. ^^

I was thinking-- get a bedspread, area rug, and new curtains, plus put a desk in on the left there, between the fridge and the TV. But what color scheme should I go with?? I was originally thinking black because it would look really "cool" and suave, but I'm suddenly in the mood for something more colorful! I don't really have any money at the moment, but I will decorate little by little as I do! It's best to start thinking about it now, ne! =^^=

Don't mind the computer and cleaning stuff.. I am in the process of setting things up and checking things, etc..

I am finally, slowly settling in, and working on things pc-wise. Pretty soon, I will be able to return to japanese study, art, and exploration.. I want to take some pictures of my neighborhood one of these days!

I like putting up artsy/interesting postcards, and if you get those stick on wall hooks you can frame up art and photography =3 There's also pretty stickers for glass doors to prevent people from walking into them though I don't know if they stick on walls. Do a brighter colour~~ brightens up the room~~

Tips~~
Hello Jamie!
Thanks for sharing with us your experiences.I'm reading your blog for a while and although I'm not big on commenting, since interior design is one of my favorite pastimes, here are few tips: For a more colorful atmosphere, the easiest is to change the curtains & other linen, place more flowers & plants in colorful pots and get some lovely items such as candles, photo frames, etc in your desired color( I would go for a beige general color with soft pink & orange & yellow mix, these would give you a nice spring atmosphere). Since the walls need to stay in this color there's not a lot you can do to have a dramatic change but a few things here & there might help a little. Personally I wouldn't recommend putting a desk between the fridge and the TV.
Have fun in your new apartment!

So you (and someone else below) suggests that she use the color scheme of her journal? = P Hey, if you like it enough for your journal, then why not? I think it would definitely be pretty.

Are you allowed to hang items on the walls? Since they now make those 3M Command thingies, you can hang stuff without punching holes in the wallsxDD But I was thinking, maybe hanging some nicely frames pictures, or a wall scroll, or even a small piece of colourful fabric or rug.

Otherwise, your ideas are very good^^ Changing the curtains and adding an area rug.

The desk would add clutter, so I would do it only if you absolutely need it for the storage or work space^^

Usually their stuff is too over the top for me, but this one seemed to be in my range ^^

Color, color, color! :D Black furniture shows the dust so easily - my sister's apartment is all black furniture and while it looks dramatic, it also looks very dusty if she doesn't dust at least once a week.

I love this interior design blog for ideas: Design*Sponge. n_n

I think you're right.. I was going to go with black because it seems classy, and because I thought my bf would like it. But now I'm thinking tan/white with pink and yellow as accent colors!

Frame your artwork and prints. Make it it your own personal design studio.

Totes agree with the person who said orange or light pink! Black is way too dark for curtains in a room like that! Bright is the way to go \o/.

I also used to stick post cards and photos on my wall all in a row, but that was because I went to an arts school that had free arty postcards on every campus corner. Not so easy to collect them in Japan. My boyfriend came up with a nice idea, which was to stick some plain or simply-platterned colour paper origami squares in a few rows across the the length of the room in a checkered pattern showing the white wallpaper behind. So it'd go:

[Square] [White-] [Square] [White-] [Square]
[White-] [Square] [White-] [Square] [White-]
[Square] [White-] [Square] [White-] [Square]

... etc ^^;;

Your new place is really cute! I wish something like that existed here for an affordable price. Would love to live there. Glad you're getting settled, and your party looked like a blast!

OMG but it has to be way cheaper in Chicago!! No way is it more expensive, not even close. How much are you paying now?

Wall decals are a nice way to add color to walls.
my3yearsmy3years on August 12th, 2010 06:09 pm (UTC)
If you go with the black and white theme, any accent colors you add will pop against the stark background. And if you go with little things you should be able to change them out with different colors when the seasons and/or your moods change.

For wall art, a mix of color and black and white photos. And if your printer is good you can just print off ones you take yourself. Very low budget solution.

I am in no way, shape, or form a designer. But I read a murder mystery where they gave design tips. That's where the "color accents will pop" came from. The wall art thing I got from a T.V. show.

Oooh, I didn't think about it, but I really like the idea of black/white photos! I can have them printed out, and then add color washes myself!

I was looking at that picture you have as your profile on the side bar and I've gotta say you should go for bright pastel colors. like the pinks, greens and blues in that photo for your room cause they really compliment you well ;)

Happy Happy Belated birthday to you!! :) Those pics look like they are showing real fun times! I'm glad you were able to enjoy it with caring and loving people!

As for your new apartment, congratulations to you on the new space- it seems inspiring, that you can do much with the space available! Good luck!

As a last side note: I received your print a couple of weeks ago (literally). Thank you so much! I really hope you can release DENKIKI soon. I'm going to display it in my new home next month when I move, myself. :)

Sincerely,

Oh oops I almost forgot: get colorful curtains to start out with! Maybe you could get a hold of fabric and make them yourself, but if you could, get several types of colors and designs, so if your mood calls for the colors to get changed, then you can do it!

I'm probably bucking the trend, but I say the less you do, the better. It looks pretty clean and comfortable right now, but it feels like it's on the precipice of becoming a cluttered mess.

neofeliss on August 12th, 2010 10:25 pm (UTC)
if you're looking for something colorful yet suave, I'd go with varying shades of blue. You already have a blue bedspread, so it'd match. :p

Plants are pretty and don't cost much, so I recommend them for spicing up your main room. :)
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on August 13th, 2010 01:58 pm (UTC)
LOL that's just sheets that I was given a long time ago. I don't have a bedspread!! (I have winter blankets is all, but they are too hot for summer)
Chappy_Rukiachappy_rukia on August 12th, 2010 11:30 pm (UTC)
I tend to favor a nice light, almost lime greeny color, as well as lilly like purple, but I'm not sure if you'd like how it would end up with some of your dark colored furniture.

I tend to like more paste like colors though, but i think if you want a bit more "lively"ness maybe a nice shade of Orange? I think it wouldn't be as bad looking with your black furniture as my previous suggestions

Or if you're more into "dark shades" maybe a nice dark green? that has some brown in it? Like your friend, starrbeam's lovely dress? :)
That way you can have some nice spots of light blue here and there + you could continue to use your current bed spread and it would not have the tv stand out so much.
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on August 13th, 2010 01:59 pm (UTC)
That's not a bedspead =D It's just sheets, since I actually don't have a bedspread! LOL, I went to the store recently, and sadly all of the cheap ones were sold out! So I am bedspread-less for the moment ^^;

For color in your room, how about light green? green is a color that matches well with most other colors you may use in your room.

Wow, your apartment looks really nice. I would've loved to have been in a place like that. At least you have space to walk. XD

Also, since you can't really change much with the walls, white is one of the better colors to be stuck with. Just be glad you don't have some ugly wallpaper on your wall. White goes with everything. ^^

Looks like you had a great time at your party too.

After watching HGTV for 2 weeks 'cuz I was sick with mono I feel like I should be prepared for this lol.

- If you like the idea of black/cool colors for the main theme than run with it. You can add color to the overall design with just pops of color like bright accent pillows, towels, curtains, etc. (The rug would be a good idea too)

- I'm guessing the stackable boxes on the right are shelves? If there's room you can add something like small pottery or candles.

- Hang postcards or small artwork if you're allowed. Also mirrors make rooms appear bigger and brighter.

:)

Oooh candles, I love candles =^_____^= I have to figure out a place to get good candles here ^^
speadee: laptop table girlspeadee on August 13th, 2010 01:06 pm (UTC)
Thanks for sharing the pictures!

I don't find your apartment boring. However, a desk might be useful. Black would match with some of your furniture, but if you prefer something colorful, I think brown or white would also match your other furniture, too.

If you can't paint the walls, maybe you could put your favorite pictures and posters on them. For example, you could put up some of your birthday pictures.
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on August 13th, 2010 02:01 pm (UTC)
Yeah, I really need a desk! I know a good place to get them here, but I don't have the money yet. When I do, it's one of the first things that I want to get! ^^
alicethepoopalicethepoop on August 13th, 2010 04:15 pm (UTC)
Jesus christ woman you are sooo friggin tall and pretty! YOWZAAAA!

Also, for your room colors i recommend medium to dark shades of purple with light purple as accents. Purple encompasses all seasons and is a really royal color. The hardwood floor would accent it well and you can drape purple fabric over the walls to tie it all in.

colours
Boring choice but bold primary colours Red and Navy blue...a bit traditional may go with the tan/wood flooring.P/s I am coming over on the 30th aug for two weeks how is the weather in Tokyo still warm or is it hot? x 10 year old mac
kakkui_1037 on August 14th, 2010 05:44 pm (UTC)
My first response was to paint the walls definitely but you can't do that. So my second response is to pick bright curtains. Since you have an LCD TV, you don't need the smaller one. Also, since your apartment is small, you should just get one of those couches that fold out to a bed instead of the mattress on the floor. I'm not crazy about the sheets either, so when you're decorating, go for a theme and a color scheme.

For instance, with my apartment, I have a beach theme so I use a lot of light colors, have little glass hurricanes with sand and candles and use items like sand stars and seashells for light decoration. Focusing on a theme and color scheme when decorating will make your apartment stand out. I also love scented candles and soaps that smell exotic and summery.

Your apartment should reflect more of you and your love for color. And you take a lot of good pictures so print out the pictures that give you good memories and put them in wall frames.
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on August 15th, 2010 08:26 am (UTC)
The small TV isn't mine, and it's connected to some electronics, so I can't get rid of it-- and the bed isn't on the floor! ^^; It's on legs. I don't care for the sheets either, but they were given to me, and they're all I have until I buy better ones.

Thanks for the tips, though!! When I can afford it, I definitely look forward to decorating on a theme! =^-^=
