And what???
You know how you hear about all of those random strange vending machines in Japan? Well, this one sells canned soups.

Canned ramen, oden, curry, chicken soup.... all sorts of strange things!!

It's in Akihabara, by the way... Think you can find it? It's kind of hiding in plain sight ^_~

I wouldn't have even known about it myself if it wasn't for my friend Patrick, from Otaku2.com! He introduced it to us when he guest starred on Pop'n Press! I HIGHLY recommend his book, too!! The Otaku Encyclopedia!! It's full of nearly everything that an Otaku would want to know! I really loved it!! (I'll do a really good review of it eventually!)

Man that's such a cool idea! I knew about hot coffee and tea, but not this. :D

I wish we had stuff like that in the states, but I'm told the lawsuits would come from people who didn't handle the product properly.

It looks like it even has it's own goofie mascot, complete with plushies. XD

Are those for purchase too?

A bunch of questions that I just thought of. xD
Can you get at the noodles or are they in little bits?

Is it a regular-sized tab or larger? Does the top come off?

Re: A bunch of questions that I just thought of. xD
I don't know about the mascot... you'd have to go and find out, I guess!

And the noodles are normal-sized, at least the ones that I had were!

Did you slurp them through the can's hole?

It DOES come with a little fork and the top DOES pop off. Yes? ^^

Thank you for introducing me to this knowledge!

I saw about this in connection with some Densha Otoko promo. Or was it some Johnny's variety with a report about otakus? Don't remember anymore. Only that the guys liked these canned stuff. XD

This gives canned soup a whole new meaning. It's like Japan has a vending machine for almost anything.

"tsumetai" oden sounds gross...lol
but yeah I've seen that machine before XD

The fairly simple (in comparison) vending machine in the basement of my high school (in Japan) had canned soup, this was in the 80s. The only kind we had was corn soup, but I do love me some corn soup (better yet if it's corn and fish soup, but that I have to get at my local coffeehouse).

I too always wondered why there wasn't canned soup in the US.

On the other hand, thinking about it now I can't recall seeing many hot drinks of ANY kind in vending locally to me in IL. There's a few of those "dispense coffee into a paper cup" machines (which Japan also has, and the ones in Japan suck just as much!) but that's about it. Not sure why that is. When it comes to drinks, they're all cold.

We do have one big vending machine that sells personal hygiene items (toothpaste, soap, underwear, razors) and school supplies (pencils, paper, notebooks, and even cheap calculators) in the main university social hall, I'm endlessly sort of amazed at that one. But it's a big generic machine with huge slots for items, seems to be stocked by the main student store.

I certainly miss Japan 7/11. Just get two rice balls, the newspaper, and a can of coffee (or better take those other items and then go to a coffeehouse outside seating) and I'm good for the morning.

White Hen is just not... the same :D

Jeez those vending machines are huge! Those look like fun to get food out of XD
Man glad they have something to entertain themselves over there xD

Ok, I gotta ask. Is it really true panties are sold in vending machines? I've been to Japan twice now and have never witnessed such a thing, but have heard/read it multiple times!
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on November 10th, 2009 01:57 am (UTC)
I've never seen new panties in person, though I've seen pics. I did see used panties once though, which is actually illegal.

Wow, that's crazy cool!
Japan is so weird.

Hehe, actually the canned soup is pretty convenient when you're out and gets hungry but no time to eat; I used to buy Pocca's hot corn potage soup from those vending machines in busy morning when I was in university!^^
