Mt. Takao in the fall~~
Yesterday, I went with some friends to Takao to see the fall leaves! ^__^

Takao is my favorite mountain in Japan, because it's relatively close (45 min) and super-easy to hike (1-2 hours)! It's not taxing at all, so it's a really nice way to spend a free afternoon or day. And bonus now, the fall leaves are changing! (Minus: it was a holiday and festival time, so it was PACKED with people) But the weather was gorgeous, the trees were gorgeous, and just the whole experience was a really nice day (again). I didn't care for the rather intense cold, but it was nice to see the pretty fall leaves. ^^

Ami loaned me her camera, and so I took a lot of really nice pictures. It was hard choosing my favorites, but :) Except for the pictures with me in them, there were all taken by me. :) I love photography <3

This is a Tengu, a mysterious japanese spirit of the woods and mountains. They can be harbringers of war and hardship, however, so beware if you ever see one.

But Lindsay is not afraid of the tengu..

Me neither!

Our first glimpse of the pretty leaves..

This sign says to beware of Tengu, for they roam this mountain..... not!

So many colors!! And the sky was so bright, it was just amazing.

Because it was Momiji Matsuri (Fall leaf festival), there was some random enka singer. She was pretty good.. for an enka singer!

Ascent into the unknown..

I like shots like this. ^^

Even the ground was colorful!

We took the tram up halfway.. so pretty!

And Lonnie and Eda we behind me and Lindsay..

At the halfway point.. =D Eda.

Lonnie.

Lindsay.

Me.

The city. <3

Here is the gorgeous panorama from halfway up. <3 That's Tokyo, Yokohama, and Kanagawa all mushed together.

Lots more beautiful pictures and the gorgeous shrines on the mountain.. ^^

Takao is famous for it's grape ice cream, so we all stopped to get some. ^^

Kanpai!!

Mmmm!

I forgot what these are, but I love them. :D

Oh no!

Oh no again!! It's a tengu!

A tengu's nose looks like this:

These are fortunes, tied up to help them come true. ^^

Some images from the main shrine on the mountain:

We've finally arrived at the top, and it's COLD!!

Greg says, "can you hear me now??" (There is no reception up that high)

It started to get foggy in the afternoon... Mt Fuji is over that way!

Such a pretty sun!

They sell oden and beer at the top, lol. =D

These next few look like a greeting card photo, XD

Heading down, we took a more deserted way.

And it was REALLY COLD and dark when we made it all of the way down. So... which picture is your favorite??

=D

Great pics. One question though. Where have you been buying your greeting cards where you would consider a picture of a dirty sink to be something you might see on one? =P

LOL By next few, I meant next 2 =D

Ohh those are gorgeous pictures! I must climb up there myself one day. I don't live where there are changing of the leaves. So all those pictures are my favorites and the over looking the city from afar.
Thanks for sharing.

Man...I wish it would still look so pretty over here but the leaves have all gone and it has already started snowing *wraps self into blanket*

i think my favorite is this one: http://namutaku.net/photos/2007-11-23-takao11/takao11_49.jpg

but i also like the ones with the cats/foxes.
and your friend's piano scarf. i saw someone with it the other day and thought of "nodame cantabile" immediately (have you seen it?).
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on November 25th, 2007 12:38 am (UTC)
Nope, haven't seen it.. I know about it of course, but it never really seemed interesting to me (and I have a hard time getting into something when it's super-popular, unless I already liked it before).

You know, it's not like I didn't want to visit Japan before I saw your blog ( it's all over my interests :D), but given that I really do feel like if I was missing a must activity... The only thing we share right now is the REAL COLD I guess, as it is so cold here recently I can feel each one of my bones freezing :D.

However, it does look like the fun of one's life, g-o-r-g-e-o-u-s country. What is that:

?

Lools like a squirel rat fox, and since there are so many of them I suppose they have a meaning and a role? That's the most fascinating thing about the Japanese culture, that everything seems to have a meaning.

My favorite picture is this one:

title or description

I am in a crazy love with autumn and fall, we don't have such season here unfortunately ( two months of rains, ten months of summer). What amazes me in your pictures, is that every tree seems to catch and keep it's own unique color, while in Europe they usually more or less all change the same. I mean check the pictures, you've got entirely yellow tree with no red or orange leaves, an entirely red tree near by, and yet entirely green one

title or description

That is very strange, is it like that usually and I just forget what fall trees look like, or is it indeed unusual?

Thank you so much for posting it all!
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on November 25th, 2007 12:44 am (UTC)
Japan is really proud of their fall seasons. (So much so that a lot of japanese people believe that they're the only country with a distinct fall) Where I live in the city, most of the trees haven't changed yet, even though it's colder than on the mountain! Honestly, I lived in Arizona for a few years before coming here, so I can't remember if the American falls are the same or not.. I do remember them being really pretty, though (except AZ, which has no fall)

The things in that first picture are kitsune, I believe. ^^ They're mischevious mountain and forest spirits (foxes).

Definitely this one:

It looks like pop art. The colors just blend into each other and it's so BRIGHT! I love it :)

Lovely pictures. Man, I wish I was able to hike up that mountain. Your friend has a great camera. The pictures came out soo clear! May I ask what kind of camer your friend has? *Is looking into buying a new camera.*
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on November 25th, 2007 12:46 am (UTC)
It's a panasonic Lumix fz20 or something like that. But while it's a great camera, I think you're better off getting something newer. This camera is pretty old.

you take the most beautiful pictures! ^__^
I loved every single picture!
Especially the ones of the leaves, they are sooo pretty!
In Texas there is never a distinct fall, there's only summer and winter.
Japan seems like a very gorgeous country, i hope to visit it someday!
:D
