青い空、早く来い!!!
This is what it SHOULD look like outside. It's spring, not winter, right?? And yet again, for the third day in a row it's nearly freezing. Rainy and cold!! A few days ago, I put away all of my winter clothes on the assumption that several months late, spring was finally here! But apparently I assumed wrong. I've been hearing about similar weather problems in other parts of the world. Man, something is seriously wrong *puts on The Day After Tomorrow*. I thought that we were supposed to start feeling the effects of global warming nowadays? I guess.... not.

I really, really hate the cold. I like rain, but only as long as it's warm enough to go outside and play in it. Or when it's beautiful and you can sit and watch it in the window. But it's too cold to sit anywhere near the window, and even with my heater all the way up yet again, it's still freezing in here. I'm not really happy with the environment recently. I wish that it would hurry up and turn this latitude into a tropical climate already. I wonder how long that will take.. (hope that I'm alive when it happens!)

So, I'm kind of in a bad mood recently. Being cold and rainy and me generally not having any money, I haven't been able to get out and enjoy myself. I've read several books in the last few days, and tried to draw a number of times, but I just wasn't feeling it. I'm too pent-up! I made plans to go out today with a friend, but they're cancelled because the weather is yet again terrible... And on top of that I have to go to some meetings for work on Friday which I am not looking forward to. It's weeks until that job starts again, so I don't like being forced to think about it right now. I do have a meeting for a new very parttime job though, tomorrow morning, which sounds really interesting. I think that I'll really get along with the people there, and I'm going to use the money from it to save up for my trip to Italy this summer!!

Um, I've also been thinking about this for a while, and I really wonder if anyone has any suggestions. I want to volunteer somewhere in Africa (some small village, I'm not too picky) this summer, for maybe about 2 weeks or so. Does anyone have any recommendations of an organization to work through? I looked around on the internet quite a bit, but I don't know anything about any of the groups, so I'm not sure if they're legit or not... and honestly, I am not willing to pay money to a companydo it. I don't understand... I mean, I understand paying for my own food and plane ticket there, but shelter and whatever else should all be free. I am, afterall, there to volunteer my time for them, to help people. But every volunteer agency that I look at charges HUGE amounts of money to VOLUNTEER and I can't figure out what that's for. And I'm not talking a small amount. For one week, it was anywhere from $700-3000 not including food and plane ticket. Um, no. I don't understand paying money. Donations are one thing, but I can't afford that so I want to help out personally and hopefully have a really great experience doing it.

I've just been feeling really worldly,  I guess you could say, this week. And maybe claustrophobic. And sentimental. What happened in Virginia a few days ago was terrible. My heart goes out to the people who lost someone that they loved in that shooting. America should outlaw guns, they really, really should (and so should the rest of the world).

While you had a false spring, I think that where I live (Santa Barbara, CA) is barely starting to get fall/winter. We had an unseasonably warm/dry winter. And when I say warm, I mean that our weather year went: Summer, Fall-Spring, Summer, and now Fall-Winter. I think that we might have had an inch or so of rain all year. And yesterday. Yesterday was so hot. It was in the 70's and today, it was overcast and gloomy and freezing all day. The weather just needs to make up its mind as to what it is doing.

I think America is too afraid to outlaw guns. My husband said what if another country attacks us and we have no way to defend ourselves..? I said take away their guns too. Then if you want to kill someone, you'll have to find a harder way.

Yes, I agree! I feel much safer here because they don't allow guns. It's one major worry that I just don't have to worry about.

I hope the weather clears up for you there soon.
I hate the cold and rain.

The weather is just crazy here.
It's 85 one day with high humidity then so could
you need a blanket the next day or two then back
to buring up. ><

That's cool you want to voluteer in Africa.
But crazy they charge that money, I don't understand it.

The Virginia tragedy is beyond words...
The last place I'd expect to get gunned down
is at college during classes.
The thought never crossed my mind.

Yeah, too bad we couldn't meet up today.

And I totally agree with you about no guns. I notice alot of ppl saying if other ppl had guns to defend themselves all those lives wouldn't have been lost but I really don't think that's the answer.

I think it would be even more dangerous if all students were allowed to carry guns to campus everyday. It would be better to place armed security guards at each building and security cameras all around.

As for Africa, I was thinking the exact same thing. I'd love to help and volunteer but yeah it does cost a bit of money to go. Maybe for now, you could look up some places to volunteer at here in Japan.
Also, have you checked out

Sentebale
. It was founded by Prince Seeiso of Lesotho and Prince Harry. Although, I don't see any jobs on their site right now, you could still try to inquire about volunteer work there. And if nothing else, you have it for future reference.

I checked out the link-- thank you!! It looks like a really interesting program. I signed up for their mailing list to see if there is ever anything available. Maybe not this summer, but next spring or something, I might be able to go, too. <3

Your trip...where? O_o So basically when I come to japan you come to Italy? XDD You won't be able to survive here considering you don't like to food tho...there aren't many restaurant of different countries...You either might starve or eat gelato for all the time..XDD

Anycase, actually I was thinking about volounteers too but not in Africa, I was more oriented to go to India for 1 or 2 weeks.
But this might happen after my graduation, not before.

When Eda came back from America, we were talking about travelling in the summer and at the exact same time we said, "I want to go to Italy." LOL it was so funny! One of the plusses of the trip was to lose weight, I thought, lol. I wouldn't be able to eat anything, it would be great! =D Though honestly, recently I've been wanting to try italian food to see if I can find some that I like. I'm sure that there is more than tomato pastas and alfredo sauces and tomatoey pizzas to italian food! I was hoping to do it while you are there, but the only time that we can go is during the summer.. But maybe it will be while you're still there! ^^ Only for about a week or so, I think.

India to volunteer? That might be really interesting! I'm also planning a trip to Egypt this summer, as long as I can find someone to go with me. I found some packages that are really cheap.

I am sadden by the shootings, and I am glad that my friends are safe. ♥ Its been cold here in Florida too, but it isn't that cold. Its chilly.

I plan on going to Africa one day, during my medical career. I think there are some other organizations, where you teach students english, and other things. I'm not even sure myself, but I will look into it.

Gah! It's snowing in Philly too!!! Good for you, volunteering. I like Women for Women International myself. You help women rebuild their lives in war torn countries. Very touching!

Hi hon.. weather has been horrible here too. Weather patterns seems to be changing a bit uh? I am in VA and what happened in VTech is horrible, I have a couple of friends who have family that go there and they are all well thank goodness, but it all hits home. I was going to there is just too scary to think about. But my prayers also go to all those students and to the families that have lost their loved ones.

I hope weather picks up and I am sure weather has also influence in your state of mind. *hugs* Spring weather will be here soon.

The cold is unwelcome here as well. It's the middle of April, nice spring weather should be here... it's no fun waking up in 40 degree weather. D:

Outlawing guns won't solve any problems. If anything, it would cause more. When something is banned, that makes it all the more desirable. People become desperate to get their hands on it. I don't know... things of this nature will continue to happen because you can't just get rid of jealousy, rage, ect.

Here in IL we are finally having spring again. Things were crazy warm in March and then it reverted to below freezing (for high temperatures!) for a while and killed some of the plants that had been tricked into coming up early. Plus, it was snowy/rainy/crappy.

But finally this week, we're back into some upper 50's, 60's, this weekend should top 70. Excellent.

I too love a summer rain, but the 30's F weather with solid grey skies and persistent cold rain and MUD, MUD, MUD? My absolutely unfavorite. Either get cold and snow, clear up, or get warm, but not that.

Have you tried oxfam? I heard you can pay only 500$ and it cover up everything(ticket, shelter, food) and they offered volunteer stages all across africa and asia. However I am not sure about the infos i am giving you because I heard it through Oxfam-Québec(canada) and the stage they offered was for longer than 2 weeks...
Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on April 21st, 2007 01:23 am (UTC)
I"ve never heard of them before, but thank you! I'll look into them!

Here in New Hampshire, I have been getting heavy wind and a mix of snow/ice/rain for the past few days. So basically, the main road outside my house is currently blocked by trees that fell from the wind. This spring is so gloomy...

Good luck with the volunteer search...

Oh Spring suddenly has appeared here, and it's really hot, so I feel bad for you and your never-ending winter ^_^;
As for volunteering, I think that's amazing of you! Few people consider helping others a way to spend their time and effort, so I think that's really admirable. I didn't know you had a fee to volunteering, that's a bit ridiculous, I guess. If you are freely giving your body and help for other you shouldn't have to pay anything u_U. That's just stupid, I understand that associations can't buy everything for volunteers, but one thing is volunteering and other is donating money.
It's a shame that America need something like a school massacre to look at their law. They should have thought about outlawing guns way before another shooting occurred. I can't understand how they watch this kind of things without doing anything in the right moment. Why didn't they look to the law
when Columbine School shootings occurred?... they had to wait something worse?... The world is just going mad -___-
josei_chan on April 18th, 2007 10:54 pm (UTC)
I would wait until things settle down before contemplating going to Egypt. My sister went a couple years ago for work with the Canadian govt for a few weeks and it really wasn't very tourist friendly.... she stayed in one of the few hotels still around/operational. Constant military prescense and many check points such as entering buildings such as the hotel... where they check your bags and occasional pat downs. Because she was there on a gov't passport... she was able to avoid some of the unpleasantness.... fewer bag seraches and stuff... plus she had escorts and drivers so she didn't have to get her own transportation.

The situation with VTech....makes me quite sad what with the new details coming out now. With Vtech... I think they should change some of their policies for security measures on campus. If they only locked down the campus and notified the students, teachers and staff... those 30 people might still be alive. My friend and I have talked about this extensively. Once the incident was discovered of 2 murders that morning in the dorm... and the gunman wasn't caught... they should of locked down the entire campus rahter than just the dorm. They should of placed/announced notices of a gunman that is uncaught and armed and dangerous. If the student body and teachers and staff were informed... they would of been wary. If classes were cancelled for at least the morning... sigh.

Hi-chan (火ちゃん)hinoai on April 21st, 2007 01:22 am (UTC)
I'm really confused. Why do you say it's not safe to go to Egypt? Last I heard, they were in any wars, and they seem to have a lot of tourism as it is.
