2006 reflections....
It's still xmas for KFC! I can't blame them, since Christmas is probably the biggest day of the year for them. For some reason, it is a tradition in Japan to order a bucket of KFC chicken on Xmas night. I'll say one thing, KFC could teach the world some good marketing if they were able to convince people of that! ^.^

It's true! But the picture is one I took before Christmas. I just saw it on my hard drive and thought that I should post it now, for some reason. But it's still an interesting thing to think of!

1. Post a list of 30 series that you like
2. Have your friends list guess your fave character from each series
3. When guessed, bold the series, put in brackets who got it and the character.
[2] means that I can't choose between these two characters so they're both my favorite... name them both! ^^

01. Marmalade Boy [Makichan: Miki]
02. Tennis no Oujisama [2] [Ayana_mai: Ryoma and Kevin]
03. Hunter x Hunter [Alsie: Kuroro]
04. Bleach [2] [Nitaspitas: Orihime and Hitsugaya]
05. Nana [Iceblueaya: Komatsu Nana (Hachi)]
06. Hana Yori Dango [Makichan: Tsukushi Makino]
07. Weiss Kreuz [Alsie: Nagi]
08. Slayers [Electricmouth: Xelloss]
09. Fushigi Yuugi [Iceblueaya: Miaka]
10. Gravitation [Alsie: Ryuichi]
11. Loveless [Alsie: Yuiko]
12. Ranma 1/2 [2]
13. Sailor Moon [This has changed since I was younger..]
14. Heroes [Alsie: Hiro]
15. The O.C. [OMG I am so in love with this character it's not even funny. ESPECIALLY this season.]
16. The Amazing Race [Toldtojoinlj: The Hippies]
17. Kimagure Orange Road
18. Friends
19. ElfQuest [Toldtojoinlj: Ember]
20. Gen13 [Kit_kathy: Caitlin Fairchild]
21. Generation X [Genkischuldich: Penance]
22. Harry Potter
I give up, I can't name any more series that I could choose a favorite character out of... ^^;;;;; But good luck guessing, if you decide to! ^o^

1. What did you do in 2006 that you'd never done before?
- I went back to America on a vacation. Yes, I was born and raised there, but since I moved to Japan I had never been back. Going to my home country (not my home, which is Japan) on vacation was kind of interesting..
- I went to a penis fertility festival
- I went to Nikko, Enoshima, and several other places
- I coached a pro singer and she dedicated some songs to me and had the entire audience say hi to me. #o_o#
- I was in a movie (Nana2).
- I met my favorite singer but lost all respect for him when treated badly (Kimeru)
- I spent entire days conversing only in japanese with friends.
- I can go on and on, but my journal is here.....

2. Did you keep your New Year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I can't remember my resolutions last year, so I don't know if I kept them or not.... but this year, I'm going to keep them! They're in my New Years post on my journal. ^^

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
A friend of mine from High School did.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Yes.

5. What countries did you visit?
America.. ^^;;; I live in Japan, so I can't say that I visited..

6. What would you like to have had in 2007 that you lacked in 2006?
Japanese fluency, a job in the arts, and a huge number of fans (of my manga) all across the world. ^___^ Oh, and lots of money!! And a few fiery romances. ^_^

7. What date from 2006 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
I can't think of a particular date that stands out more than the others. The truth is that a LOT of things happened this year, and many of them that impacted my life and the way that I feel about something. They are all very important times. With the exception of one, I usually wrote about them in my journal.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I improved a lot in Japanese... but honestly, I don't feel that I achieved anything worthy of saying that it took a year to do it. So 2006, I would say nothing. ^^;;;;;; But I am going to change my life in 2007, just watch! ^o^

9. What was your biggest failure?
I have a big mouth when it comes to my own personal feelings. I want to learn to guard my feelings more carefully. Even if it means that I have to learn to be cold, there are just some things that I am not willing to let hurt me again.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I'm still sick now... x.x

11. What were the best things you bought?
My copic markers, I think. They're definitely the purchase that I'm most proud of this year. ^__^

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Huh? Like my friends? I think that Elvy went though a lot this year and really has pulled through amazingly. I'm very proud of her and glad that we are such good friends!! (even if we never get to see each other because there is an immense ocean in the way ;_;)

13. Whose behavior apalled you?
Someone that I thought was close to me. But I guess only close from this side.... but I will still never understand XX's behavior, and probably never will be given the chance to. It's too bad. I would really, really, really like to have that impossible conversation, even now.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Food, of course! ^^;;; Why is food so expensive in Tokyo? ;______; Especially fruit, the love of my life... FRUUUUITTTT!!

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
There were a lot of things that I was really excited about. I was really excited about my part in the movie (extra, but still!!), about Hideaki's 20th anniv concert (which was awesome, I am very proud of him), about making good japanese friends for the first time, etc. Oh and my birthday party was the best!! =D

16. What song will always remind you of 2006?
David Hasselhoff - Jump in my Car. Gah, the HORROR!!! But I will always think of this year when I see/hear it. ^^;;;;

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Sadder, but that is depression from staying inside alone a lot to recuperate and having too much time to think about things that were/are bothering me. But overall, I think that my life has defintiely improved for the better since 2006 dawned. ^^

ii. thinner or fatter? Thinner for the reasons that I said in my last post..

iii. richer or poorer? Poorer. ^^;; Actually I'm making the same amount but even while I spend less on entertainment, I seem to still have less money. wtf?

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Study japanese. I did a lot, but I should have put more effort into it earlier in the year.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Stupid fangirling earlier in the year. I am ashamed of how I acted back in 2005, thank god I have grown out of that.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
????????????????????????? I don't know, it's nearly a year away!!!

21. Did you fall in love in 2006?
I say yes, but only the friendship kinds of love. ^_^ I love a lot of people.

23. How many one-night stands?
I don't do that, sorry. ^^;;;;;;;

24. What was your favorite TV program?
It's really hard to say.. I watched a lot of TV, mostly downloaded from America. But at the top of my list were The Amazing Race (though the end SUCKED), Survivor (though also the end SUCKED), Ugly Betty, Heroes, House, Ghost Hunters, and various..

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
LIfe is too short to hate people for a long time, you know. ^_^ Why bother? Though there is still a girl from my HS days that I found out hasn't died yet. Someone needs to take a hit out on her!! (I rarely say that people deserve it, but she really really does. I thought she would have already gone some other way by now too.... >.<)

26. What was the best book you read?
2006 was characterized by bad books, I swear!! I like fantasy/sci-fi, and I read a lot of it last year (or at least what I could afford since english books are expensive). But other than reading old ones that I loved over again, I didn't read a single new thing that was any good!! What is wrong with the sci-fi/fantasy world nowadays? Where are Bujold, Logston, Salvatore and McCaffrey? Oh, that's right, making books that suck now...... I really wish that they'd return to their old stuff...

But I did start some japanese books that I really liked. I haven't read very far into either, though.. ^^;; They are スイッチを押すとき and 1リットルの涙. I started both because I saw a play/drama based on them and wanted to read the original. Both are very sad though!!

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
The David Hasselhoff sings. I mean, wtf? I didn't know, and I probably was better off not knowing. But man, it was a hilarious discovery if any! =D

28. What did you want and get?
Some little things, but I'd rather not go into them.

29. What did you want and not get?
I can't say, but I wish that I had 'gotten' it. I don't know if I'd be happier, but I wouldn't have went through that depression. But it's not as simple as that.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
Death Note 2. Aaaaah I loved it!!!

31. What did you do on your birthday?
I had a great party on the riverfront with great friends. =^___^=

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
To publish as a mangaka. But I didn't and for reasons that only I know (and I do know them). But I will overcome them this year for sure!! ^o^

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2006?
I started to dress more like myself, but... I still can't. Clothes that I like, I am just too tall for.

34. What kept you sane?
My friends, of course!

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Blah, this is stupid.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The American Presidential Election.. gah what a waste of everything! I mean ,the same dimwat who didn't do a good job last time was elected again, so what was the point of it all? -_-;;

37. Who did you miss?
I miss someone right now!

38. Who was the best new person you met?
There were a lot of new people that I met in 2006 who are very special to me, so I can't choose just like that. Or at all. I love all of my friends!! ^-^

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2006.
Protect your feelings. Follow your heart, but don't let other people let you feel bad about yourself! Physical wounds can hurt regardless, but emotional wounds only hurt if you let them.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
"Let's have a good time~ Everyone say, la la itsumo chikaku ni I'm happy" from Orihime Inoue's "La la la" song. ^^

It's a new year with new exciting things to do!! Today I have some exciting things planned!!! Okay, well, most of it is running errands and shopping for presents that have been pushed off due to illness and the occiasional bad weather, but it should be fun anyways! ^o^// Today is gorgeous and sunny! I'm also thinking of going to the AirGear musical tonight, but I don't know..... it's supposed to be really funny though......

:P I haven't even been reading your blog that long, so I'm going to take the obvious Orihime from Bleach as one of your favorites. Matsumoto or Hitsugaya as the other?

And you should definitely go watch the Air Gear myu! It's really funny, and the boys are good in it ^_^

Yea, it feels weird to say you went to your birthplace on vacation. It took me a while to adjust to saying I went to HK 'on a vacation' when I had lived there for the first several years of my life.

Haha, it's the Colonel!

I have enjoyed looking at your pictures the past bit, and so I'll share one:

It's not quite the Colonel, but it is a funky repurposed (?) Santa. Notice the fur trim on the pants! The weird thing is, this picture was taken in OCTOBER 2003 (as people familiar with Japanese seasonal cruft might guess from the plastic autumn leaves). It's next to some pachinko place in Ameyoko in Ueno, and his sash says 「本日の主役」 (or roughly "main man of the day," for any non-readers).

One of those "whaaaa?" things. :D

I need to check out Prince of Tennis sometime, as it recently was in the top few favorite animes in a poll of Japanese fans. I guess it just doesn't sound all that appealing, as I'm not a big tennis fan.

One thing I'm surprised about is how Kare Kano never seems to make the Japanese lists, but it's definitely one of the more popular series over here. I wish I knew of -- (I wish there were!) -- more romance-oriented series that felt so realistic to me. (If you can suggest any, I'd love to hear of them.)

Perhaps Kare Kano is too meticulous and slow for most? Then again, I'm also a big fan of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikō, which is both beautiful, richly done, and teasingly slow. (Scanlations are available here for the first episodes, and here for the final ones, if you'd like to check it out.)

Hana Yori Dango: Yep again! =D I tend to like certain types of characters and girls more than boys, so it's pretty easy to guess most of the time I think =D
Ranma 1/2: You're half right, want to take a crack at the other? =D
Sailor Moon: I do like her, but wrong! ^.^
Amazing Race: They were cool, but the ones that I love the most were soooo much cooler. =D They were the only people I've ever thought actually deserved to win the race. =D They were in a recent season, though not the last one.
Harry Potter: It used to be Hermione, but the one that I love the most is someone else. =D

For some reason, it is a tradition in Japan to order a bucket of KFC chicken on Xmas night.

Well it all goes back to the old western tradition of having Christmas turkey for dinner on Christmas Day. You know...like in "A Christmas Carol." LOL

Anyways, chicken is the closest thing they have to turkey here, so KFC can promote the traditional Xmas chicken dinner each year. It's amazing how popular the KFC tradition is here though.
